After choosing the teleport node upgrade, it was working as expected until I died and switched zones. After that, it no longer teleported and instead worked as if the node was not chosen and yet still had the cooldown.

They recently changed smite teleport node to have a global cooldown with movement skills… Can you check that this is not what is happening?
So after despeccing the node and respeccing it, I think this was a misunderstanding on my part. I thought the node let you target anywhere on the ground to teleport, but it seems you can only target enemies still.
Is that correct?
Yes, Smite always needs a target.
