I’m a new player to Last Epoch, & I’ve only put in about 65 hours so far, but I am loving it. I’ve been playing a mage for the majority of those hours (had to restart halfway through d/t the recent data loss issue with offline characters), but I’ve noticed the majority of the unique/set items I’ve picked up have been for other classes. I do like getting unique items I can try out on other classes, but I plan on making the mage my main, so it’s hard to get excited about unique/set items when I know it’s usually going to be for another class.
This may have come up in the past, but I wanted to suggest a smart loot system similar to the loot 2.0 system that was introduced for Diablo 3 with Reaper of Souls. It essentially increases the chance that a drop will be suited for the class you are currently playing rather than for another character, & it would be nice to have a similar system in Last Epoch for unique/set items. I believe their system still has a 15% chance to drop items for other classes, so maybe Last Epoch could have a 75% increased chance of getting a unique/set for your current class & a 25% chance of getting items for any class. It would make it slower to gear up multiple characters at once, but it would be nice to get some unique/set items for my class that I can try out while I’m leveling.
As an alternative, I also wanted to suggest tweaking the rune of ascendance to make it guarantee that the upgraded item will be specifically for your class. I used one earlier today thinking that if I used it on a mage-specific relic, then I would get a mage-specific unique/set relic item, but it turned into a rogue relic which is just kind of annoying. It could still be entirely random with no guarantee you won’t just get a duplicate of an item you already have, but I would prefer that over getting items for classes I don’t necessarily plan on playing.
Other than that, I’m definitely having a lot of fun with the game so far, & I’m looking forward to seeing the last few class specializations on release.
A lot of uniques are not class specific but cater towards certain archetypes, which usually are on specific classes, but can still be utilized by all classes if you are creative.
Uniques do not have any weighting towards the character/class you play in LE at all.
There are only certain item types that drop less for certain classes, but uniques are unaffected by this.
That would be way to powerful.
Also I like that RoA is completely unrelated to the char you are using it on, so you don’t need to think about what character you need to log into, when using it.
Yes, but a lot of uniques are class specific and include modifiers that increase the skill level of class-specific skills. What I’m suggesting is not to increase the number of unique items that drop, but to increase the likelihood that the unique items that do drop will be well suited for the class you are currently playing.
Why do you say having rune of ascendance guarantee the upgraded item will be for your class would be too powerful?
Hard pass on any more ARPGs adding smart loot systems. I don’t like getting lots of items I’ll never use as much as the next guy, but paring the pool down the way D3 did made it feel less like an item hunt and more like skipping through a field of daisies that are vomiting all the items you want at you.
So, you & @Heavy like the current system where you can potentially gear multiple characters & multiple builds up at the same time with the downside being that you won’t necessarily get items relevant for the class/build you would like to play.
My suggestion essentially boils down to being able to gear up one class faster than others at the expense of not being able to gear up other classes at the same pace unless you spend time playing those classes. You don’t like skipping through a field of daisies vomiting all the items you want at you, other people don’t like skipping through a field of daisies vomiting items they don’t want or need.
I get not wanting to totally mimic D3’s system that only gives a 15% chance of getting a completely random item, but that’s also why I suggested a 75/25 ratio*. It could be 70/30, or even 60/40. Setting aside my RoA suggestion, what do you think could be a middle ground between both perspectives?
Only one of those sets of people is fundamentally at odds with a core design component of the entire genre that LE is part of. Perhaps you should consider that a game based around random loot is not for you.
Even if you did get what you want, you’re still going to be drowning in loot you don’t want or need because that’s just how random loot works. The only difference is that you’ll likely hit a higher level of gear power significantly faster (which let’s be honest is all you’re really advocating for here), at which point why was there random loot at all if you got everything in a day the way you do in D3?
Are they fundamentally at odds with a core design component of the genre or are they at odds with your opinion of what the genre should be? You did say earlier that you don’t want anymore ARPGs adding smart loot systems, and D3 itself is in the same genre as LE, it just happens to have a loot system that you don’t like - and that’s perfectly fine. I just used it as an example.
The current system will allow you to gear up multiple classes at the same time because, as you said, that’s how random loot works. My suggestion was to increase the chance that unique/set items that drop will be well-suited for your current class - without totally eliminating the chance of getting items for other class. Will it allow me to gear up the class I actually want to play faster than those I’m not playing? Probably! Will it allow me to hit a higher level of gear power significantly faster? It’s random, so who knows. What I’m suggesting has nothing to do with drop rates.
What exactly is it that you are trying to argue? That you want LE to be just like Diablo 2? Perhaps you should consider that if your only response to being asked for your thoughts on a middle ground between your idea and an idea you don’t like is to gate keep and tell someone to play something else, the forums aren’t for you.
Oh, here we are with the “this game is not for you” broken record. Well, have you ever considered that maybe people can like a game, and still have problems with elements of it? I remember this same mantra being repeated ad nauseum regarding trade, and now we have trade in the game.
Maybe it’s time to stop telling people what games are/aren’t for them…
