Skill/spell type question

If i have lighting skill/spell for example.
And one of the items adds +x skill/spell fire damage.
Will it make partly my spell/skill doing fire damage?
Will this part of base damage scale with increased fire skill/spell damage affixes?
Will this skill/spell be effected by different effects and chances triggered by fire skills?
example x% chance to ignite with fire skills/spells?
If no what is the point of added damage of different elementals?

Generally every flat added damage value of any kind/element does work on every “hit”.
Basically everything in LE is “hitting”, except DoT(some DoT abilities do have an initial hit though)

“spell damage” just scales the foundational ability.
while specific % increases like fire or necrotic do scale the basic ability(if it’s doing the corresponding damage type) + every flat added values (if it’s corresponding damage type)

Any conditional “trigger chance” does relate to the basic ability(this ability need the right tag in it’s tooltip)

Any ailments (ignite, poison etc.) has a % chance “on hit”, it does not matter which damage type the abilitiy does.
In fact you can ignite without 1 point of fire damage(that is very different from other arpg’s)

type of added damage doesn’t change anything, (even better to have added damage to be same type, so we don’t need to put affixes of different type)

As a little extra info, there are some cases where all of added damage, regardless of initial damage type gets converted. From the top of my head, there is a Harvest node which does that, i think it’s called “Elements of Death”, which converts all added base damage into necrotic.

%increases of any type also just increase the damage of the “final converted damage type”.
So if any damage component of a skill gets converted, just %increases of this final correspondign type kicks in

ill be more specific : lets say i use soulfire unic item: 180% chance to ignite with fire skills and necrotic skills.
I use warpath that is physical
i have + 10 melee fire damage
or ill use decree of flame node of sigils of hope skill that grants me additional fire damage.
Will soulfire ignite chance work now?

And second if you have mixed base damage example fire and lighting you need to waste 2 affixes : fire and lighting increase damage shard.
if you have all base damage same type you need only one and save space for another useful affix

Every skill/spell that does hit(so everything except DoT ticks) and is tagged (blue tags within a skill tooltip tell you what “type” it is) as either fire or necrotic does have the 180% ignite chance

It does not matter if you have +10 melee fire damage(this damage does apply to warpath and increases its damage output, but it does not tag warpath as “fire skill”)

Warpath in your example is a physical skill, so it is not valid for the 180% ignite chance from Soulfire.

Yes you are generally right, trying to focus on one damage type is best(most of the time), but since almsot all damage amplification(so % increased damage) are additive, it really coems down to more factors.

As with your example, both damage types(fire and lightning) are elemental and can be both scaled simultanously with increases to elemental damage.
