Skill penetration question

there’s a node in forge guard that gives “20% fire penetration with forge strike”

since it doesnt say “forge strike hits” does that fire penetration apply to the ignites it would apply as well?

I don’t think so. ‘Fire Penetration with Ignite’ is its’ own thing.

Well, it’s a more specific thing, like elemental damage over time vs. damage over time. So it might apply to Ignites that Forge Guard applies maybe?

If it is mentioned as part of a skill then you should presume its for the hit with that skill (maybe there are exceptions but most of the examples I have seen it applies to the hit). You should also consider that a skill and the ignite it applies are completely different things, so in this case the fire pen is for the skill and does not apply to the ignite it applies.

Yeah, that sounds logical.

If a node doesn’t specify that it only applies to a skill’s hits then it generally applies to any ailments as well. This is how ailments inherit relevant skill damage modifiers (% fire damage for ignite, for example).

Since that particular passive doesn’t mention hits, I’d assume it does apply. It should be easy to test though.

Edit: Did some testing offline & yes, it does apply. I was getting 25 damage per tick from an unspec’d Forge Strike from 2 stacks of ignite without the passive & 31 per tick with it (which is 24% more damage but that’s likely the rounding given the low number of stacks & low damage per tick).

That’s not a reasonable assumption. It will apply to the hit, but unless they’ve changed something then non-hit-specific modifiers apply to the skill as a whole & include any non-hit parts. If you have some specific examples we can go through those.

That’s an affix & yes, it’s it’s own thing.

I stand corrected on being corrected on my correcting. This was basically what I had thought but then the rebuttal also made sense.

Testing is always the best thing.

Thought I must say this does actually highlight how difficulty the deciphering can get with these layers upon layers. That’s not really a complaint or a negative, just a statement that sometimes obtuse is a thing.
