Skill Levels granted by Items vs Hard Levels from Exp

I found a chest that granted +1 to Flame Reave and had some luck crafting onto it. I had leveled all my skills to 20. I equipped the chest, making Flame Reave lv21, and giving me an extra point. I put the point into a passive, but decided I wanted to put it somewhere else.

I removed the chest item and it removed a point from another passive (Point 4/4 in Engulfing Flames, making it 3/4) that I actually wanted.
I put the chest back on and put the point back into Engulfing Flames, while still having the 1/1 in Worldfire (which I no longer wanted).
I remove the chest. 3/4 Engulfing Flames again. Repeat. Every time, it removes the point from Engulfing Flames. So the only way to ensure I remove the point I want is to use the Respec option.

Just as I was afraid of, it removed lv20 from the skill, not the 21st level granted by the item. So now Flame Reave is back to being lv19+1, losing the extra point I gained from the chest and now I have to level it all over again. Getting from 19-20 took a while and I’m really bummed about that :frowning:

Do you think it’s possible to change the Respec to target “extra” points instead of levels 1-20 gained from experience points?

This does come up fairly frequently. The devs have put a lot of thought into this to avoid scenarios where one might be able to game the system to get free respecs. Therefore they have an algorithm that works out given the shape of the skill tree you have where to take the point from.

I saw the reddit thread after posting. I was doing some more lv75+ echoes and the skill is releveling much more quickly than I thought it would. I only considered how long it took initially to get from 19 to 20 and was dreading it, haha.

I appreciate the prompt reply, hopefully how quickly the skill seems to re-level will balance out the desire to keep people from just swapping points on the fly too easily.

I had similar issue with Aura of Decay. It took from my healing thing instead of Area size.
Solution for me was to keep the +1 item on, the respec one point from where i wanted to remove it. Then remove item.
Since game told me skill was lvl 21 with 1 point available, when I took off the item it said lvl 20 with 0 points available and all my points were in there where they should be.

It is a bit of a work around, but it worked like a charm tbh.
