Shotgun Fireball

Was very disappointed to find out that Fire Spray node on Fireball doesn’t allow it to “shotgun” big enemies with multiple fireballs from up close. Really?

I get it that x3 damage boost from a single node is kinda insane, but other games have this figured out somehow.

Make the subsequent hits deal less damage, move +projectiles nodes further up the tree, but please make all however many hit the same enemy if they’re big enough to get hit by all of them.

It doesn’t because there’s a node that lets the projectiles hit more than 1 per cast. If you could just walk up real close and get them all to hit anyway, it’d defeat the purpose of those nodes.

I kinda see the point of the Embers node from a balance perspective, but from a flavour/gameplay point of view it’s just stupid. Why can’t projectiles hit multiple times by default? What’s the point of making all of them go in a straight line? Shouldn’t there better be cone angle modifiers instead, if a player wants their balls to boom-boom what’s directly in front of them, instead of spraying? With >3 projectiles, I’m not sure if there’s an enemy that would get hit by more than 3 with how it spreads them in a cone right now.

Unfortunately the best answer I have is, that’s just how it is. It’s the same in PoE. Projectiles do not shotgun unless specified to. You’ll note that even Multishot has the same mechanic, though there’s a node that lets it shotgun the way you want Fireball to shotgun. But it is an investment cost on tree.
