Searching for a new ARPG

Greetings.
I saw this game on steam recently and since then i have been wondering if it is worth it or not. I played Diablo 2 back in the day, D3, Path of Exile, i really liked PoE but it seems to be a game really shifted towards a race, plus if one doesn’t buy some cosmetics at the store your character doesn’t really look that good or it doesn’t have a look that makes you realize that with time and the hours you have put into the game your character feels like it had some progression behind it.

I am wondering if Last Epoch is an different from PoE around the topics i just mentioned? Does your character look better as you progress within the game or does one have to buy cosmetics at some shop?

I guess a cosmetic shop may be a thing one day since they have the supporter packs? Personally i don’t mind a shop in the future since it seems a thing in gaming in this day and age as long of course they don’t give players advantages but it would be nice to have good looking gear of all tiers obtainable by simply playing the game and not just spending money in the cosmetic shop.

If someone here has played Diablo2, PoE or any good ARPG’s can you tell me your opinion on Last Epoch and why (if that was the case) you switched from playing any of those games to come and give Epoch a go?

Thank you all for your time reading this.

Hi , welcome to the forums, I have played all of the games you mentioned and for me the game is worthy.
Is less like a race than PoE , but if aesthetics are something you are really into I can say the game is in EA now and the graphics are good , but not AAA game good. Also there is not that much progression in the looks, probably because not all the models are in yet.
I still play PoE leagues and D3 seasons , I love the genre and I really think that even in its actual state LE is completely worthy of the price they are asking for , and a very fun game thats getting more and more polished as time goes by. Don’t know if it’ll go from a good ARPG to a great ARPG , but so far it has a nice community , enough build diversity , an expanding amount of content (i have 100 hours played in LE , so for me the game has already paid for itself)

Hey there. Welcome to the LE Forums!

I personally never played D2, but i know plenty of people that really enjoyed D2, that like LE too.
Le has alot of similarities when compared to all kind of aRPG’s, but i think D2 is on that keeps popping up, when people try to compare this.

Obviously people also compare this alot to PoE too.

The game’s pace, especially in combat is alot slower than PoE and does not power creep into attacking/casting 10-20 times a second with almost no movement restrictions.

TTK, attack/cast speed and movement speed are alot slower. Especially due to movement skills having cooldown.

We currently have some visual progress, but it’s far from done.
There are alot of older or not yet reworked/overhauled base types of certain kinds that do need some overhaul, especailly in the 3D art.

Also uniques and set items don’t all have unique 3D Art yet, but it will definitely go there.

If you character will look super crazy impressive without MTX, i don’t know.

All i know the 2D Art (on the items tooltips) for some uniques does look very nice.

We don’t have any details about the cosmetic shop yet, since It’s not implemented yet.

Since LE is a B2P title, i guess the monetization will be a little bit different than PoE anyway, but it’s all jsut speculation at this point.

I personally would also think, that we maybe get some in-game means of getting cosmectics, but i don’t know.

I have played thousands of hours on all kinds of aRPG’s, most notabely Marvel Heroes and Grim Dawn, also some few hundred hours of PoE.

IMO LE is the perfect mix between Grim Dawn and PoE, very complex with alot of depths, but also not as daunting as PoE. Very starter friendly with good ingame sources for mechanics/formulas etc.

Also the progression system is the best of any aRPG i ever played.
All new mechanics, and game systems get slowly introduced to the player, so you never feel overloaded.

As someone that have played, Poe, Diablo 2, Grim dawn and Titan Quest, even Diablo 3, i can start telling you that this game is everything Diablo 3 lacked when compared to build complexity of Diablo II, but not overwhelming as PoE, , the stash is awesome, have a big space and you can buy more slots for gold, there is low level legendaries and set items, the passive tree for the specilize skills gives a lot of build diversity and fun, i am literally playing two class with the same skills and can be really two different builds.

Even for a game in development, already feels pretty much competent and really have a Diablo II vibes, a lot of skills (in base mode) are similars or copies of diablo II skills, but the specialize tree system let you change them as you want.

for example, raise skeleton, in diablo II you summon a warrior skeleton, here you start summoning warrior and archer skeletons, with the tree even unlock skeleton rogues and also remove the warriors or archers for the skeleton pool.

another example is elemental nova, that mix schock, frost and fire nova in base skill and you can choose which ones in the passive nodes.

It’s somewhere between D3 and PoE when it comes to complexity. The gameplay cycle is more or less like D2 without different difficulties.

The endgame is a bit bland right now from MY point of view but there are some endgame modes not implemented.

The game is worth the money and you can easiely spent hundrets of hours.

Hello Zylok and tanks for the welcome
When i talked about looks it’s not about the graphics but if you as a player could get cool armor sets from the loot you get in the game? In PoE if you don’t spend some money in the store well the gear in the game (that you get from looting) doesn’t look that great, i just wished that this game for example to not make the coolest gear available for players in a cosmetic shop but i guess that we can’t know that by now since it is in EA.

As far as content goes the story or acts are already all in the game or it keeps expanding? What’s the end game or what will it be in Last Epoch?
I have seen a video with a review when one of the complaints was the lack of big open world areas kinda like PoE or Diablo, it seems that there is this sense of being a little condensed to small areas? (I can be wrong about this)

We currently miss the last chapter of the story. At least from what is already planned and announced.
I am sure they devs could possibly expand the story further if they want.

We currently have Arena and Monolith Of Fate.

Arena is wavebased horde mode with leaderboard.

MoF is a mix of mapping from PoE and Rifts in D3.
Pre-generated maps, with random enemies (within a certain enemy pool depending on the timeline), where you push echoes, which get increasingly mroe difficult.
You need to select one of 2 modifers, which increase difficulty and reward for the next X echoes.

All of this happens within different “Timelines”, which are alternative storylines with new boss encounters. This is also theoretically infinitely scalable.

The real shining point here are the very unique and cool bosses (which feel like dungeon/raid bosses from MMO’s sometimes).
All bosses have specific loot (uniques and set items), which can be target farmed.

LE is not Open World, and neither is PoE.

Is this good or bad? Probably subjective.
I don’t miss Open World in LE, the only thing i hope will come more in the future would be more optionl side areas, that incentivice exploration.

As @Heavy said, we don’t know for sure since ingame 3D assets are still being developed and there’s no mtx store yet.

But I can tell you the game director has indicated on more than 1 occasion that he wants players to be able look good with in game gears. Whether or not you eventually find the coolest gears to be ingame or from mtx might then be a subjective matter.

As a long time ARPG player who has played all the Diablos, POE, Grim Dawn and many more, I just love this game,

I’ve only had it for a month and have 350 hrs in it

It has great balance between build complexity and ease of understanding builds. Improvements to your character with gear, passives and skill nodes is very tangible with none of the three character building aspects overly dominant. To me that’s the essential part of a good ARPG and I think they’ve nailed it.

Builds don’t feel complex just for the sake of complexity and it’s balanced well enough which allows a lot of build diversity.

As to the character and gear model looks. It’s getting there and needs a couple of passes but that has never really been a biggie for me. In other games I play that have extensive MTX gear and character skins I usually ignore those options and embrace the “murder hobo” look anyway

Game play over eye candy is what matters to me.
