I am a little concerned about the fact that it does not shut down when told to do so. I am still fairly new to the game, and have played just one character, to level 23. I can’t say for sure how many actual hours I have in, since, as the subject states, AFTER I shut the game down, it silently turns itself back on in the evening and runs in the background. So as it is now, Steam thinks I have 79.6 HOURS played.
I have tested this theory on a few occasions. After playing, hit Exit to Desktop within the game. Confirm in Steam that the game has stopped (Play button is enabled). Come back a few hours later, to check, and it is now running in the background, and the Play button in Steam now says “Stop”. Clicking the Stop button has no effect, and the game cannot be CTRL/ALT/DEL’ed.
WHY does the game start itself back up and run in the background, after I’ve shut it down? Why when I open Steam to attempt to “Stop” the game, does it outright refuse to shut down? Why am I forced to reboot my whole system so that I can take back control of my machine?
This is extremely suspicious to me, especially since there have been reports of games doing this very thing in order to STEAL our resources for Crypto mining. Not very encouraging. Early access or not.
Never had this happen to me in over 900h of LE play through Steam…
Some thoughts…
Are you using any VR headsets or anything like that? Not to play LE but just installed? I have heard that sometimes these do weird things.
Are you using Steam Cloud Saves? Or Steam Overlay?
When you leave the computer running, is it locked? Do you leave Steam itself still enabled and maximised? Do you have any automated software running? Could the cat have walked over the keyboard?
Have you run a game file verification to make sure that your installation is ok?
Do you have any automated updates etc configured that have launch after update enabled?
Could your system have been compromised in some way? Are there any services/processes running that you cannot account for?
I don’t have a need to lock my system (5 of us here, and we all have our own system) but I sometimes still do lock it. Steam is still running, yes, but not maximized - Even when I shut down Steam, and restart it, Last Epoch still shows as running, and can’t be “Stopped”. No auto software - No cats. LMFAO!!!
Haven’t done this yet. Will be next step at this rate.
No automated updates configured.
No compromises, or unusual activity other than this one.
Case in point. I was just playing before my last reply. I used the “Exit to Desktop:” via the in game menu, and watched as the “Stop” button turned into a “Play” button in Steam. I went and checked my email, did a bit of window shopping online, and 30 minutes later checked back with Steam. The “Play” button is now back to a “Stop” button which, when clicked, does nothing.
I have found a few references online to games that wont stop running in Steam but nothing decently technical that could explain why this might be happening… only “general user” suggestions to resolve it…
A suggestion recommends stopping the particular Steam Processes via taskmanager - which would do the same as you rebooting your machine. This could be related to something like the game not shutting down properly due to compatibility issues or similar and the steam process trying to restart it automatically.
Another suggests that your Steam app itself might be bugged and need a proper reinstall… Personally I have never done this but apparently it involves deleting some files in the steam folder and then running steam with admin priviledges so that it can fix itself… See the following for this process (mainly to ensure that you dont have to reinstall all your games again)
AHA!! I finally found the problem!! It was not Last Epoch. It was not Steam. It was, in fact, Razor Cortex! It was the only thing I had changed recently on my system (bought a new mouse) and as soon as I turned Cortex off, The Play button became active again!
