As I level up , it’s become difficult to find the right gear.
Wouah, an exalted item for my class lvl 75 ! But 0 resistance on it …
I must keep my rare item lvl 47 …
Same a beautiful legendary with a lot affix, prefix, netflix for my build but 0 resistance , if I use it , I loose 20 points resistance void and 30 points cold !!!
But WTF this is not fun !
Have you ever tried crafting? It’s really easy to get the right affixes when you learn how to properly craft items.
For circumstances like that you can fill in with idols until you can make your res up in some other slot.
Or you can go ahead with uncapped resists. No one will stop you if you want to take a pass on all defensive stats and just go full pewpew glass cannon. I think we’ll all be fine with that.
Yes I craft!
Believe me, you get used to that
The whole point of gearing is exactly making choices. Do you want more attack at the expense of losing defenses or do you want defenses at the expense of losing attack?
There are multiple layers of defense in LE and very often you don’t actually need to cap everything. Many builds survive fine with 60ish resists.
What do you want the alternative to be? You get automatic defenses and gear only has offensive stats?
All my idols are + resists but it’s not enough.
In my opinion, you are doing something wrong.
Max out your resistentes sometimes isn’t necessary.
Take you class an see all defensive layers you can have, and see what’s going wrong.
Well I have played a lot of h&s , really a lot. Some without this mec. And it’s more fun.
It’s more fun for you. Some players like to have meaningful choices where they have to give something up to be able to get something else.
I find that LE items are the most fun of all the ARPGs I’ve played and I’ve been playing them since D1. You get a lot of choice but you also get a lot of control over how you craft them. It’s not hard to cap resists and still have offensive stats.
Also, due to the fact that there are many defensive layers, you can still have tanky characters and not have resists capped. You even get this on builds that use almost all uniques.
Having gear without choices is very boring for a large portion of the playerbase, as can be seen by the fiasco that were D3 and D4.
Well I cap my resists in function of the boss. For the trash I don’t care , I kill everything .
But if I gear all my legendarys I lack resists.
Yes, you have the ability to craft said gear to adjust to it.
Resistances are prevalent, hence if you got a non T5 mod on it then a glyph of chaos takes care of that and allows you to have ‘some’ resistance on it.
If handling your gear isn’t fun for you this is clearly not the game for you, absolutely and 100% not.
Idols offer a limited amount of resistances. Usually you’ll stay non-capped in a few and make it up with the blessings from the monolith timelines. There’s a few ones which provide that.
The sole one I know about is D4 from the ‘big’ ones out there. Their system is a mess.
Resistances aren’t everything and I’d argue that armor is more valuable compared to max resist as Armor is ALL mitigation. I rather get 1k more armor than cap resistance. Now I wouldn’t run 0 resistance and it’s easy to boost several from Blessings, implicits on gear or even talents.
Long story short there are many ways to approach this and heck if you are running a Ward build, then just stack that and get a massive Ward shield which then Resist don’t matter really.
Resistances in LE work a bit different than in other titles of the genre. Not having maxed resistances is much less punishing.
Armour is important as AbombDaChamp says.
Later on, you can also get a good amount of resistances from timeline blessings.
I like LE’s approach of resistances, I hope they keep it
Why equip all with legendary?
Some kind of contest?
Seriously, last epoch it’s not about equip you char with all legendary.
To do that, you must have an objective or at least a specific build for that
I wish your post was made more politely so that devs would be more inclined to listen.
I overall agree about resistances in these games though. When I heard this one was attempting to improve on the mechanics of others, I had hoped resistances to be one of these.
-I don’t personally find juggling resistances across most my gear to be engaging or fun. I just find it to be a slow-you-down annoyance.
Since this a feedback thread, a few alternative ideas:
-Add/buff more resistances as implicits on all gear.
-Add/buff resistances on only a few item types such as idols and jewelry.
-Move resistances to it’s own system,/tree. Gain resistance as you encounter different mobs with a few nodes along the way that will further enhance resistance to a damage type or enhance your own damage with that damage type.
I get that a lot of people like resistances as they are, which is fine. My opinion is just that, my opinion. I don’t get any sort of “meaningful choice” feelings when dealing with resistances. I just find it a chore, as is.
Agreed. I don’t think resists are great design, especially when there are this many of them. As you say, they make gearing less fun since a lot of potential upgrades are hard to equip right away because of resist constraints.
I also kind of don’t like them because there being one for each damage type doesn’t really matter. Outside of the campaign, you can’t really decide to gear for a specific resist based on damage you expect to face since it’s basically random what you encounter, so you need all of them.
The only real distinctions between the resist types comes from specific passives that give you some of one or scale with uncapped amount of another. But those could just as easily be any other stat. Plus it’s not like stacking up that resist over cap gives you some benefit you’d get anyway that is then made better by the passive. It just becomes another number that goes up to increase a different number.
When I brought this up in the past I’ve been told that being capped on resists doesn’t matter as much in this game compared to PoE due to some math that TL;DR means that having some resists is very good but the last few points of resists aren’t as good. And while that’s better… it doesn’t really justify why the stats are there in the first place. If they’re just ok because they’re less important than normal… then why have them?
It just feels like one of those relics of RPG design that’s just uncritically included in all future games in the genre because it’s just a thing in these games.
To give the player variables to create their character around, a staple of RPGs.
You could ask this question for every single stat in the game, leaving you with a very shallow system. You end up with a simple action game. A set of fixed characters with their respective skills and (dis)advantages.
Then it’s an action game - but no ARPG.
Kind of reminds me of discussions about resource management. There are players who are only happy when the game doesn’t require you to account for mana, rage, etc, so that you can attack infinitely often without coming up for breath. I recall a lot of hew and cry over at PoE when one league introduced higher mana costs for just about everything.
I think worthwhile stats are ones that enhance the fantasy of the character you’re playing. Sticking with defenses, you might think armor is really cool so you go build a character that has shitloads of armor and be mr. tank man. Or maybe you like the idea of blocking everything with your mighty shield. Etc.
What’s the fantasy around a cap stat like resists where everyone is supposed to more or less have the same amount of them regardless of what build you’re playing? You can’t really lean into them as any kind of identity unless you have one of those very specific passive hooks that somehow turns it into damage. But at that point you’re not really a “resist” build as much as you’re just bumping up one number with an unrelated number. If a build scaled with something like block, then a character stacking that would have a different defensive profile from another character doing something else. If you stack a resist for one of those builds, you have the same defensive benefit from the resist as anyone else, you just happen to also get some damage.
