Random hard crashes

Hi,
Player.log (2.3 MB)
i am experiencing random crashes during my monolith runs when all of a sudden computer powers itself off.
Since its really random, i am unable to point you to any action on my side or even recreate the crash in a repeatable way.

Note 1: this happens ONLY during last epoch gameplay, other games run fine
Note 2: i did verify game files, all were up to date.

I know that’s not very helpful, but maybe you can figure something out of that player logfile.
Thanks!

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

Random crashes to the point where your Computer powers itself off are usually a symptom of something like a critical driver issue or something like power delivery (old PSU) or temperature issues (overheating, failing fans, case airflow etc). It is unlikely that the game itself is causing your system to shutdown due to a game bug - typically if this were the case there would be more people having similar issues. Usually bugs just crash the game.

Your logfile has a wide range of issues - some of which could point to GPU drivers and others that are fairly common in this beta version right now… Nothing immediately saying the problem is XYZ as far as I can see. Unfortunately.

Your GPU is notorious for running hot - which in itself isnt a problem in a well maintained and properly cooled case, but if you run LE on too high settings, it could be causing problems over time or in combination with some other issue that you dont experience with your normal daily use.

You havent provided something like a dxdiag to give more insight into the rest of your system or the diagnostics which may indicate better what is going on.

Without much more info, I would recommend the following:

  1. Make sure your WIndows OS is updated and there are no failed patches.

  2. Make sure your GPU drivers are no older than 3 months AND they are installed with a CLEAN installation - not upgrade as this doesnt always replace problem driver files.

  3. Reduce your in-game settings. I dont know what resolution you are using, or what the rest of your system is, but as a test, drop the settings down to Very Low and see if stability improves. Remember LE is in beta and performance (although better than previous versions) isnt great.

  4. Check your Event viewer or run a Dxdiag report and check the diagnostic section to see what issues your system is having and if its logging anything around the time your machine shutsdown / crashes with LE - it could have the answer to what is happening.

  5. Monitor your system - see if things are maxing out, getting really hot or other issues presenting themselves

Hi,
i found out that “Radeon enchanced sync” in the AMD Adrenaline Edition Software was causing this, after i disabled that setting i had no more crashes.

Thanks for the additional info… Did some quick reading up on it, and its supposed to work similar to(as a “better” alternative to) v-sync by fixing things like screen tearing when your PC is capable of and does output FPS higher than your monitor refresh rate… Its not supposed to do anything else that I can see and more importantly isnt supposed to do anything if your PC cannot output fps faster than your monitor refresh rate.

I also dont see any specific Unity (game engine) issues mentioned online so I am wondering if it is conflicting with the in-game vsync or fps limits - it may just be a specific combination of settings or your exact setup.

Glad it resolved things either way.
