Questions from two PoE players looking for advice

My wife wanted to play a paladin and I wanted to play a Void Knight, so we both rolled sentinels. I’m beginning to think that was a mistake because we’re both tanks and slogging through fights with not enough DPS. In PoE we could balance any characters to have sufficient EHP and DPS but we don’t know our way around here.

  1. Was rolling 2 Sentinels a mistake? I’m thinking of re-rolling a more DPS oriented character to partner with her pally. Maybe a Rogue or Acolyte? I don’t like playing minion builds so I’m not interested in Falconer or necro-styled builds, but Blade dancer looks appealing and is there an acolyte class that is pure caster without having to use minions?

  2. Should we be forging now? We just hit L17 and were under the impression that we should be saving our crafting mats for when we get better gear, so we haven’t forged at all. I suspect that would help dps a lot but I’m wary of using up precious mats this early in the game. What’s the consensus on this kind of trade off?

  3. We play ARPGs for the action and the character progression, we’re honestly not interested in story. If we just go straight through the mainline quest, will we be missing out on anything from side quests? Does progression come faster from advancing the main questline or are there extra skill points or other things we won’t want to miss from side quests?

Thanks for any insights or suggestios. So far, we’re having a good time, and man, what a smooth launch compared to some, um, other games lol.

Hey,

  1. I don’t think rolling 2 sentinels was a mistake, i had a void knight previous season and i had a blast bonking through everything that came in my path. I think it is better however to be flexible at low level and build what the game throws you. (I had a certain build in mind, but the game decided to throw me some elemental leech gloves and fire damage items, so now i’m a flamethrowing minigun rogue… which is super fun… LE has a lot of freedom)

  2. I think it is good to save your resources, especially at low level just be flexible and change your spells, try stuff out and build what you drop…

  3. you can skip the dialogue no worries, but i woudln’t advice on skipping all the sidequest, some do give passive points, allowing you to spec more.

All i can say is , the game is pretty flexible in its freedom, I would say there is a lesser difference between the different builds, you can pretty much play what you want and change on the spot. Also, if you have certain favourite spells that you want to buff & use more, you can hover over the spell and you will see the main elements (dexterity, strength, melee… ect), you can also search in the spells for certain effects (bleed, stun, fire…ect)

1-No, every mastery has good builds. Hammerdin, for example, is a cake walk. So it might be your choice of skills that isn’t working so good?

2-As I said in the other thread, you’ll soon have hundreds. So don’t just slap any affix in any gear, but health/res is always handy, and a few offensive affixes will also greatly improve your experience. So use it every now and then (especially if you find a pretty decent weapon with high flat damage), but don’t worry about trying to craft every few levels.

3-You’ll need to do some of the side quests to get all your idol slots and passive points. That being said, you can just do the main quest until the end and then backtrack and finish only a few side quests to get what you’re missing.
As a sidenote, there are way more sidequests giving idol slots/passives than the limit, so you can skip some and not miss out anyway. But doing the main quest should get most of them and you can do side quests in Maj’elka (act 9) which should finish you off.

Yes, I’m sure our skill choices are quite sub-optimal, but we’re learning as we go, with lots of great help from this fabulous community.

Thanks for your excellent summary!

Adding to what DJ said on nº 3, if you don’t want to go through all the story again on future characters, there’s also a campaign skip feature through dungeons so you can skip most of the story and do only a few quests afterwards, all very close to the dungeon exits, to unlock the remaining idols and passive points.

Even with some sub-optimal skill choices, some skills are much easier to use. Like I said, with Hammer Throw you can mostly cake walk the game. Or Warpath.
Others are harder to in the early game, like Javelin. Or Judgement, which should be great in endgame but not easy to use in early campaign.
So it’s not so much being sub-optimal, but maybe the skills you’re trying to use?

Or maybe it’s you simply not having a decent weapon? Like I said, you want a weapon with the most flat damage available early on. That will make a huge difference in your playthrough.

OP, you should just play what you find fun, as well as your wife. its not a wrong choice.

as far as i know, LE doesnt have too many “party synergies” but some classes have more ally bonuses which can synergize with others.

from my pov you’re never forced to get buffs for allies and can treat it as just partying up for the sake of partying up. you still get the benefit of monsters having 2 targets rather than one.

if you DO intend to synergize, even using the same class is possible. just build slightly differently. but the most important thing is each player brings something to the table.

for example you could focus on being a physical damage dealer that stuns, while your wife could be a lightning users that shocks. shocks and stuns work well together as shocks make enemies easier to stun.

its not limited to that too. one of you could have party buffs or another has stuff like fast hitting armor shreds/enemy debuffer.

i believe the main issue why you’re suffering is your gear is not too good OR your defences are too good for your level. its hard to gauge.

dont be afraid to upgrade your gear. crafting materials in this game is VERY generous.
