Question on Upheaval buff

The node for upheaval called “master of the totem” states that upheaval hits grant my totems buffs that stack. I might be overthinking it but is it saying i need to hit my own totems in the blast of the upheaval in order to put the buff on them, or is it saying anytime i hit an enemy with upheaval my totems get those buffs?

Just as a continuation on that question, if i turn upheaval into a totem, do the hits from the upheaval totems then buff my other totem the storm totem? If so does it also buff itself then at that point?

It states “Upheavals hits grant […]”.

A skill can only hits enemies by default, unelss something specifically states otherwise.
So you need to hit enemies with it and then all active totems will receive the buff.

Ty! i appreciate the help. I never would of even considered it had to hit the totems but another ability specifically stated it had to and got me being paranoid others might need to do the same depending on what it meant by “hit” The fact that hits can be assumed to only affect enemies is very helpful then.

Just to name an example where hitting your allies does something, but its sepcifically stated.
One of the Shaman Sets has this effect for Storm Totem.

2 Set:
Storm Totem can hit allies to grant 21 health

3 Set:
Storm Totem can hit allies to grant 21 ward

This is how its worded, it specifically states that it can now hit allies, because hitting allies doesn’t work by default.
