Update: I’m guessing it was just a bug. The ones I picked up after have been fine.
I just unlocked this for the first time and I just bought the game on launch. Sandrek (the main NPC in the Observatory) told me to look at the 4 telescopes and select a prophecy from one of them. I had to wait to get 1400 favor to select the one I wanted in the Armor Prophecy, which was for 3 exalted belts dropping when killing an exiled mage. Once I got 1400 Favor, I selected that one and it said the Prophecies will change and to talk to Sandrek. I did that and it gave me a quest complete reward and now when I look at my Prophecies it’s for the Death of the Amber Elemental in the Lightless Dungeon. I never completed the first Prophecy or got 3 exalted belts or chose the new Prophecy so I’m not sure what’s going on. The prophecy I selected no longer appears in the telescope as the image changed to a Druid looking character with new ones and my 1400 Favor was consumed.
If I’m understanding this correctly, you have to get the required Favor BEFORE selecting a Prophecy, right? Then doing that Prophecy to get the reward, like killing an exiled mage. That never happened and it never showed up in the prophecies tab.
Yes, prophecies are like quests. You unlock the quest with favor then when you finish it you get the reward.
If you are new to the game, swap to the Merchant’s Guild. Prophecies are a complete waste of time. Sure you’ll get more items, but it will just be more of the same random crap you already get. You are at the mercy of RNG the entire time and this game’s itemization is like vanilla D3 in terms of randomness… so good luck finding any good items on your own.
With MG there is a clear and steady path to updating your character. Play monoliths, earn gold, buy upgrades (cause you aren’t going to find many of them I’ll tell you that much), raise the difficulty, earn more gold, buy more upgrades, rinse and repeat.

That is awful advice. Prophecies are amazing, you don’t know what you are talking about.
If you dislike RnG CoF is making the odds better to get what you need by doing Prophecies. If you don’t want RnG at all go market guild and farm gold and favour to buy the stuff you want to buy.
Pirophecies are buggy. You don’t always get the one you bought, and sometimes they randomly reroll.
I have never had and issue where I didn’t get the prophecy I bought. I’ve also never them rerolling but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, I just always see the same ones that were there before when I go back.
I’m rank 10 in COF. Want to know how many COF items I have? 3. One is rank 3 and two are rank 4. One of those 3 items is an idol. The prophecies are completely worthless. The only thing they do is throw twice as much junk at you.
I think this is what happened. The two I picked up after that were fine. Just gonna shrug it off as a bug and move on. It was never a big deal, I was just wondering if I did something wrong but it doesn’t look like it.
I have 3 as well, but they all have LP, which is also a CoF boost.
And 3/6 Idols are CoF as well
Of course it never happened to you so it never happens.
I’ve only got the wrong prophecy once. But I’ve had them randomly rerolled almost every time I’ve wanted to save up for a certain one. Now, I don’t reroll unless I have at LEAST 2820 favor that way I can buy any 2500 favor. If I want to save up for a 4000 that’s just a risk I take.
Furthermore, when they’re randomly rerolled they ignore lenses, so it’s not even “helpful”.
And when I was given the wrong random prophecy it was an arena-based one and I HATE arena, so never doing it. It’s just sitting there lol.
I didn’t say that since it never happened to me that it’s impossible that it never does, simply that as many as I’ve done I’ve never experienced it.
You expressed your experience and I expressed mine. If you don’t like when people express their experience then don’t read it, it’s not a hard concept. There’s no reason to go and attack the person that says they experience you’re having has never happened to them.
