I think set items are great, but they are just not viable in the game with the ability to create legendary items. I would propose allowing set items to drop with the ability to have an open prefix or suffix on drop much like how LP works with uniques. This would allow a player to just insert a stat of their choosing however but would help to bridge the gap between uniques and set items and maybe open up some more creative builds.
I recommend a search on LP for Set items. It has been discussed extensively for years.
As I recall, the last concensus, affirmed by the devs, were that giving crafting ability ie. LP to set items etc, isnt going to happen, BUT the devs agreed that Set items need some love across the board to make them more appealing and useful. Lots of possibilities on how this could be accomplished, including reducing the number of items that form sets to boosting stats to various other suggestions.
What this ends up being, only they know.
Iâm not proposing LP on set items. I am proposing set items being able to drop with one open prefix, one open suffix or one open prefix and suffix slot. This is not LP as there would be no crafting legendary or opportunity to put in four total affixes in, but rather just slot in a maximum of two shards - one prefix one suffix - if the item dropped in that state. Each open prefix or suffix would be given 10 forging power or something allowing a player the opportunity to craft up to two t5 affixes.
I understood that, but its effectively the same discussion about crafting on Set items that has been brought up before. Most people had exactly the same issue that Set items just dont cut the mustard when compared to Uniques & especially after the addition of Legendaries.
What you are describing isnt really any different, you just dont want to have the restrictions of LP creation but just want it normal crafting.
The discussion points are the same or virtually so as per LP on Set items and the devs didnt (no idea if its still dont because this is a very old topic) want any crafting or altering of Set items.
They would rather make them better by default.
It has nothing to do with âhaving the restrictions of LP.â Crafting with LP allows you to have T7 affixes. This proposal is to keep legendary and uniques as the premier items in the game but allowing set items to be a step below.
It is nothing like LP, has nothing to do with the restrictions on LP and the discussion points are not close to the same. You cannot craft a T6 or T7 affix yourself. You can craft a maximum of T5.
Look, somehow we are talking in circles here. Crafting on an Set item be it via the LP route or normal Forge crafting is essentially the same thing with a few caveats or restrictions. The end result is an improved/changed Set item through the actions of a player.
BUT:
The devs have said they dont want to do this - via LP or otherwise.
The devs have said they want to make the Set items better so that the need to improve them is irrelevant.
The discussions around this are lengthy and many years old now and unless the devs chip in that they have changed their minds about this, then thats the latest I know wrt improving Set items in any way.
There are still some very powerful set items though. Nothing in the game can compete with Fereborâs Chisel for what it does. If you want Crit Totems, that is pretty much it.
Set items need to be more focused on specific builds and have set bonuses that are good.
The only âcraftingâ suggestion I had for set items would be the ability to move the set item to a different base.
