I think Last Epoch is earning a solid reputation as the next-generation ARPG, alongside titles like Path of Exile and Diablo. However, one area where it still feels lacking is in the sound design—particularly the sound effects. Overall, the audio feels light and tinny, with a noticeable lack of bass. This results in combat that lacks impact and weight, making movement and fighting feel less distinct and, at times, monotonous. Honestly, the game sometimes makes me feel sleepy while playing.
When the sound design is solid and impactful, though, it makes the whole experience far more immersive and genuinely fun to play. Good audio makes you feel connected to the game world and turns even basic combat into something satisfying.
Just yesterday, I played Diablo IV, and the powerful low-end sound and impactful effects instantly snapped me out of any drowsiness. The combat feels grounded and immersive, with both enemy attacks and player abilities carrying a satisfying sense of force and feedback.
Another area worth improving is the sound design for item drops. This is something PoE and Diablo also struggle with to some extent, but Last Epoch’s item drop sounds are very subtle and lack the excitement or gratification that should come from finding something rare. The level-up sound is moderately satisfying, but I think it could be even more celebratory. In ARPGs, player progression—through leveling up and item acquisition—is the core experience. So I’d love to see rare item drops get the same level of attention in the audio design, with more luxurious and rewarding sounds that make players feel like they’ve hit the jackpot.
