It makes the game very frustrating to start up if you have controllers and want to play with mouse and keyboard. I have a HOTAS set up and don’t want to disconnect them every time I want to play this game.

It doesn’t do that for me. On startup I get a notification popup in the lower left corner. If I want to switch to controller I could just press any controller button and if I’d then want to use keyboard and mouse again, I can press a key button. It’s seamless for me.
I see that popup, but I don’t press any controller buttons. Nothing I do with keyboard and mouse has any effect outside of ALT-F4. It is unplayable if I don’t unplug my HOTAS, which I am not going to do for this one single game.
Reading up on this, looks like it is a widespread issue with HOTAS and many games and especially Unity engine games. LE is also special because it’s a game where you want seamless keyboard/mouse and controller transission (for playing the character vs. inventory management)
File a bug by pressing F8 ingame.
In the meantime you could try thirdparty keybind software or try eject the USB device in taskbar if that is easier than actually unplug your device.
That might be, but this is the only game giving me the issue.
I can’t file a bug by pressing F8 in game, because nothing on my keyboard works in game. I just tried to make sure.
I am not sure how a third-party key bind program would help. If I “eject” my HOTAS devices, can I re-enable them just as easily?
Not as easily. Another way would be to go to your System settings (old school ones) > Device Manager > Find your HOTAS or controller > Properties > Enable Device or Disable Device
Yeah, I am not going through all of that for one game that I have alternatives to. It is the only game I have that does this. I may like this game better than the alternatives, but not that much better. This means they won’t be getting money from me for cosmetics (why buy what I am never going to be able to see), and I cannot see myself recommending the game either. I am a developer. There may be something I don’t understand under the hood, but to me it just doesn’t seem it would be that difficult to fix it so that I can use my keyboard to at least go into settings and tell it to ignore any controller inputs.
