Player Level VS Area/Monster Level

I am a lev 87 Voidknight and at lev 100 Monoliths. For me that feels a litte bit off.

Since almost the Start of the game i was 4-5 levs lower then the Area/Monster Level.

I dident “speed run” and i did all side quests. In the monoliths the gap between my level and the monster level increased to a point where i was lev 85, when I started lev 100 Monoliths. (I did some arena but not alot)

My Problem is, when i die now i am not sure if i should be here in the first place.

For me, i played a lot of ARPGs, it feels strange that my level is always lower then the Monster level, especialy for the first not over powered character.

Anyone has the same feeling?

PS: I know i can go back and do lower zones, but should a normal playthrough not keep you close to the level of the zone?

It depends on where/how you are progressing. I am pretty sure you will already know what you should do.

I have a level 76 that completes level 90 content. The issue for many since the rework of the end game that progressing is faster than XP gained. It does not hurt to go back and reset or rerun lower-level monoliths. You can farm for specific uniques or improve your blessings.

In the campaign, I am usually getting to the level 55 monolith at levels 46-48 to get all the idol slots and passive points. I have completed echoes as low as 32 in level 55 mono, on a super OP build.

Making sure to grab the XP shrines, and clear a larger portion of the map does increase XP. Avoid making just a straight line to the boss in 30 seconds Killing more rares does as well adds XP and rare drops.

This is about right… According to the devs, they want your character to be virtually complete in terms of build by the time you hit 80-85 lvl… The rest of the charater levels are just meant to be the icing on the top…

This means that you "should be running higher end game content to 1) get end game gear and 2) get better xp to get those last few levels in to reach the few remaining top passives.

It will also highlight any deficiency in your build design… If you find that at level 87, you are not doing so well at level 100 content (and yes, its meant to be hard) there may be something not working with your build - maybe you need to swap some passives or skill nodes around or maybe you need a better gear item or two to compensate for some deficiency… Maybe your playstyle doesnt suit this particular build…

Maybe for the campaign but not for monos, no, you wouldn’t be expected to wait till you’re lvl 100 before going into the empowered monos.
