Pets, will they ever become useful?

The pets are a great addition to the game. However, I was really hoping the season 4 update was going to made them actually useful. Like, picking up gold, bone piles. etc. is this something that is going to be introduced into the game at some point???

Honest question: Why do so many people want pets to “do something”? They are just cosmetic, why isn’t that enough? I do not understand this urge to this very day. And it seems to be cross genre. In so many other games from completely other genres people also want this.

Think about how much gold and other loot you’re leaving behind—especially if you enjoy playing in the MG, where gold is already scarce. ARPGs are at their best when you’re speed farming, and having items picked up automatically lets you stay in the flow. It saves you from constantly stopping, worrying about missed drops, or having to remember to grab everything. It’s not an end all be all, but it certainty helps!

I get the sentiment but I disagree with it. The urge for speed and efficientcy is probably a MG/trading thing ( I am a SSF/SCF/SAF player in any ARPG so maybe that’s why I don’t get it)

The decision on how fast/efficient you want to go is largly impacted by your build and how good your loot filter is. If you fee llike you have to stop too often I think your loot filter might just not be in a good spot.

General loot is one thing, but items like gold, dungeon keys, and ancient bones are a different story. Pets aren’t really intended to pick up standard gear such as gloves, helms, or swords anyway. And as far as I know, there aren’t any loot filters for things like gold or dungeon keys.

We can agree to disagree, but it would definitely be a nice quality-of-life feature—especially to avoid missing something important like a dropped key and having to trek all the way back across the map to retrieve it.

There are filters for keys. You select to Hide or Show, then select Resources and select the keys you don’t want to see or hide.

I thought there was a filter for gold because others have requested in the past and I thought it was added, but…

Huh, kind of a strange filter to have unless you already have too many lol. Thanks for clarifying!

Under Settings > Gameplay there’s a slider to hide stacks of gold below a number.

I thought they had added that, just couldn’t remember where it was as I never use it.

Such a system creates a idea of both FOMO and Pay to Win. The base game does not provide the player with any pet. All pets are gotten from the MTX shop and Supporter Packs, meaning that this mechanic would be gated behind additional paywalls. This is a very toxic and predatory behavior that seems harmless until you consider how many people dont buy MTX or Supporter Packs for various reasons. They will automatically be both disadvantaged and further annoyed by changes like this. It also gives off the impression that anyone who doesnt shell out 5 bucks for a pet, or buy one of the packs, will be at a massive disadvantage, especially online with the market regardless of the truth of it.

Then comes the second thing: Player Minions. If MTX pets can pick up Gold/Runes Etc why cant Skeletons, or Wolves? Then classes that do not have Minions are also at a disadvantage.

It works in Torchlight because you always have a pet. No perma pet = Pay 2 Win, regardless of how true the statement is to reality.

Mike always said that if they added something like this (pets picking gold) then everyone would get a free base pet.
They’re not really inclined to add it, though.

It used to & the devs have previously said that if the pets were to do anything then everyone would have to get a free one.

I get what you’re saying, but honestly, most ARPGs include some kind of pet system that at least picks up gold. Like you mentioned, it starts to feel a bit pay-to-win especially in its current state where there isn’t even a free pet option.

That said, I think more people would actually be willing to buy pets if they had some practical value. Don’t get me wrong they’re a nice feature as-is but paying for something that just follows you around (maybe for bragging rights) feels like a bit of a waste. If they could at least pick up gold at minimum, it would make the purchase feel a lot more worthwhile.

You might think it is small but it is P2W. You add a little feature that gives pet owners an advantage and a chunk of the player base will just leave. So if they do this then give me a free pet rock and it won’t matter.

Mike always said that if they ever did something like this, then everyone would get a free pet.
At one point every sale of LE, in whatever edition, gave you a free pet. I’m not sure if that’s the case anymore, though.

That being said, not every game in the genre does this. D3 took something like 7 or 8 years for pets to pick up stuff. D4 took a year. PoE1 and 2 don’t pick anything up.
This is more of a staple in games that are leaning into P2W, like TLI and Undecember.

And, tbf, you don’t actually need pets to pick anything up. You can just increase the pickup radius and achieve the same end result. Players just want the stuff that’s on the screen to be picked up, they don’t really care how.
