Percentage chance on Rune of Shattering

Is there a percentage chance for a Rune of Shattering to work? As in to get at least 1 shard instead of zero shards? From time to time, especially since 8.3, I have been getting some decent +1 to skill shards and there seems to be about a 50% chance for the rune of shattering, even if the only skill on the item is the +1 to said skill, of giving no shard at all, which kind of sucks, excuse my language please. I am wondering,… does the chance to actually get shards ever go up? For instance, as you gain higher levels is there a better chance of the rune of shattering actually working in your favor for +1 shards etc? I love the skill shards but I actually feel a bit of dread using a rune of shattering on each one lol. Maybe it’s just the halloween spirit. In some cases, I one case I actually got 4 shards at one time. So it can be a boon, but just like gambling, when you go bust on that one skill you really want to win and you can’t seem to find but one or two dropped pieces with that skill attached to them… lol. It’s all fun, and I know the skill item pieces will show up again but sometimes they seem to take forever to drop. I have only ever found one +1 to summon skeletons and never +1 to any other acolyte skill. I have a couple of Perserverence staves that give +1 to Necrotic Spells and that freak rocks lol. I’m just asking out of curiosity. I get it from the 15 cats that live in my house with the 10 people that live in my house. I’m naturally a curious cat and into everything lol.

ROFL, so I am in game as I was typing that question and when I went back in, a mob dropped one item that had +1 to rip blood and +1 to summon bone golem haha. I don’t plan on using those in my build but the fact that that dropped is hilarious.

I am adding this just a few seconds later… because now I think some Gods must be laughing at me because +1 to Transplant just dropped lol. I am in the Temple of Eterra at the beginning of the game with a new acolyte starting a new build. This could be interesting haha.

I don’t think we know the exact formula, but you will get 0-(Affix Tier) amount of shards for every affix, but minimum 1 shard per Item.

But generally speaking, having high affix tiers gives you more chances for multiple affix shards

Okay so am I to understand that there may be an underhanded trick to this. Yes, I know this has it’s risks too. Using the Rune of Removal, you can gamble the chance of removing the other affixes off of an item and try to leave only the skill affixes. In that case, with what you are saying, if you only had one affix left because of the rune of removal (used multiple times if need be (hence the risk of actually losing the skill anyhow), would you stand a better chance of making certain that you got at least one skill shard if you were only left with the skill you wanted on the shard? Yes, I know it’s backwards crazy but I have had pretty good luck with the rune of removal removing very minor abilities and leaving more powerful ones… I wonder now if that is inherent in the rune of removal’s own chances and the company just specifically hasn’t said so on purpose.

Nevermind that idea At All lol. I tested that theory to see if the Rune of Removal tended to leave more powerful abilities for last on an item. Basically weighting them heavier. It definitely Does Not. I had a mage torso piece with +1 to Mana Strike, something that I personally extremely rarely use, and tested it. That was the very first thing it took off, turning the chest piece into a piece of trash. So folks, just fyi, don’t try that.

But continuing on with what you mentioned Heavy, you said having higher Tiered Affixes gives a better chance of giving at least one shard, correct? I have come across a few items that in the Forge say that have Tier 2 skills. Mostly Rogue skills honestly. From what I read from someone a few days ago, T3 and higher only drop on level 60+ items, correct? Is there somewhere that I could read what Tiers drop when?

I found this just in case others are wondering: Tier 5 affixes now start dropping on items as early as level 32, instead of at level 81. Tier 6 affixes can start dropping at level 55 (what level does the monolith start at again?). Tier 7 affixes are reserved for the very top tier gear and will start dropping at level 90. The difficulty to find these items should not be underestimated and even though T6 can start to drop at level 55, it is unlikely that you will find one in your first monolith run.
