Pally mastery request

Hello please consider allowing the paladin master class to be able to Equip a staff and shield or a staff and off hand catalyst as a possible 2nd option. I’m not asking for both for me its an either/or situation.

I feel this fits with the way paladins passive tree is set up with multiple nodes with spell and shield related stats. To me thematically it just makes sense.

Also note i don’t want the paladin to be able to equip 2hd melee weapons and a shield. That’s FG’s thing and personally i believe it should stay that way.

An example of a build where this would be useful would be radiant lance with a staff (spirit xylem) and a shield (flayers pride) with paladin passive tree node (heavens bulwark) and a radiant lance skill tree damage mech of (1% more dmg per 1%block chance)

Personally i view paladin as the “spell dmg melee guy + a shield”, and it hurts my brain to “throw away” shield buffs as having a staff has so much naturally spell based positives.

The way I understand it, everything related to Paladin spellcasting is specifically balanced around not being able have both a staff and a shield.

  • The “Heaven’s Bulwark” passive grants so much flat spell damage because you can’t have a staff with a shield. It’s a way to allow spellcasters to mitigate the loss of flat spell damage that comes with using a shield; or, to phrase it differently, to allow players to use shield + wand/sceptre to play a more tanky spellcaster without losing too much damage compared to a staff.
  • Radiant Lance gets such a massive damage multiplier from block chance because having significant block chance means using a shield, which means not using a staff.
  • Radiant Lance can get flat spell damage from its skill tree scaling with block effectiveness for the same reason as the previous point.

If you were to give the Paladin a passive like FG, that allows him to wield staff + shield, there would need to be some very, VERY heavy downsides for it, and/or redesign the points I mentioned above, to the point where I don’t think it’s realistically feasible at all.
