Paladin - Animation + Skill Activation Bug

TLDR: Examine Multi-Strike use with Hallowed Ground/Order of Lagon/Wandering Bolts. Smite attacks not registering properly. No activation when in close melee proximity with enemies + delayed bolt activation/animation when they do activate.

Background: I don’t read any guides when playing, and try to make my own builds. I came up with this one last night, and found some glitches. The build works phenomenally well, but the abilities bugs + animations make it extremely difficult to play/want to play.

Build Basis: The build is centered around a few main skills in the trees

  1. Multi-Strike + Hallowed Arsenal + Perfect Steel + Doctrine of the Anvil (for Smite proc generators)

  2. Smite + Order of Lagon + Unbalanced Scale + Wandering Bolts (for throughput and AOE Lightning damage)

Mechanics

With current tooltips + spell descriptions: This should provide on melee hit - 1 melee hit + 5 smite bolts + 3 lightning bolts/per smite bolt (total 15 lightning bolts).

1 of 4 things occurs:

  1. Enemy is in close melee range - Hit Multi-strike - Only 1 melee attack registers - No activation of Smite or Lightning Bolt procs.

  2. Enemy is slightly away from the PC (feels like between 3-5 yards in game) - Hit Multi-strike - melee attack does not register a hit - Smite and Lightning Bolt procs activate.

  3. Smite activates - Lightning bolt procs fail to activate.

  4. It works properly roughly 25% of the time. That’s just a guesstimate, but how it feels in game.

Aesthetics

As said, this build is extremely fun and powerful. I like that I came up with it, but from an enjoyable experience visually and mechanically it is difficult to play long.

  1. Multi-Strike Animation - This looks horrible. The direct vertical slash up and down at that swing timer looks insane. It’s quite distracting. Comparatively the swing animation for Vengeance looks amazing, so I would suggest something more in that direction vs. it’s current animation.

  2. Smite Bolt Animation - This looks horrible in my build, as I am trying to generate multiple Smite Lightning Bolts as possible at once. Perhaps using it occasionally it’s not distracting, but as built - it is eye sensory overload and looks extremely clunky and rough animation wise.

Aesthetic Recommendation

  1. Change Multi-Strike animation - I haven’t had this feeling with any of your other melee animations so far, just this one.

  2. Smite animation - Reduce the length and extremely vertical distance the bolt travels from the top of the screen all the way to the ground. Or alter it’s animation. On larger screens a crackling lightning bolt travelling 20 inches on a screen continuously creates 1. skill delay issues and 2. visual overload.

  3. Smite + Order of Lagon + Wandering Bolts animation - When this combination is used it’s just flat out rough. Would recommend taking a look at a game called Soulstone Survivors - they do a screen wide chain lightning effect that is modest (yet noticeable) but doesn’t destroy your screen or eyes. Moving towards that style of visual affect would be much more appealing overall.

I enjoy making my own builds, and this one works amazingly well - just needs some backend assistance to really make it shine.

That kinda sounds like how its supposed to work. If there is a single target in melee range then it gets hit by multistrike. If you have Flanking Strikes and the single target is outside melee range then you get a proc. If there are multiple mobs in melee range then Multi-strike hits and you get procs.

Also, if its a bug it should go in the bug forum not feedback.

  1. I don’t know if it’s a bug or working as intended - though it feels like one.

  2. I also made suggestions on changing/improving it - hence this folder.
