Own builds are made more difficult

friends of the well-cultivated escapism!

after the failure of one of the most hyped game franchises, it’s a relief to have a reasonably priced and thoughtfully satisfying game.

but, dear developers, please remove the penalty for redistributing skill points. how can you build in such an annoying mechanic? for me, this doesn’t result in any gain, the freedom to try out builds myself is restricted.

thx

2 reasons:

  1. Because regaining those points is relatively easy, but you’re still pushed towards actually trying out things in a farming environment, not just pick, hit dummy, swap.
  2. It actually helps build diversity, because every variation between the “mapping build” and “boss build” is viable, depending on how players engage in those types of content. Insta-swapping reduces the viability of hybrid builds. I used to play WoW and the ability to repsec per boss killed the value of ‘choice’ in builds for me.

Welcome to the forum…

Your request is a common one, usually one of the first things a new player has to say… However, the devs have expressed their views on this numerous times and have put measures into place to mitigate this “negative” that seemingly only newer players tend to have.

The main reason that this exists is not to be a penalty, but to prevent respecing builds based on the content you are about to face. I.e. the developers dont want the game played in a way where you spec your build for clearing, then just before the boss your spec for single target damage. This philosophy is carried over into other areas of the game - like +skill affixes on gear being randomnly removed if you unequip items.

The game has a minimum skill level that is based on your character level - so the higher you level your char, the more a skill will have an automatic minimum level even if you respec it entirely. This helps tremendously for early respecing.

The early parts of the game are very forgiving in terms of difficulty, which means that even poorly chosen skill and its chosen nodes will usually still perform ok. Typically respec’ing in the early stages makes very little difference to overall performance.

The game is much easier to respec the higher levels you are for both the reason that the skill minimum scales with your char AND that the amount of XP you get later in the game can mean that by empowered monoliths end game, you can respec a skill from 10 to 20 in an echo or two - even less if you use an XP echo.

So… This one has been suggested and requested for years, but the devs have maintained their stance on it…

sounds reasonable, thx

While I understand the reasoning. This is easily overcome by just forcing you to respec at an NPC in town rather than on the fly.

You won’t be able to respec in dungeons, the only thing it would possibly help is on the bosses in Mono’s and currently you can still do that. It would take almost as much time to re-level the new skills as it would to teleport out into a town and do a ‘respec’.

And with the exception of those pushing extreme content, the time it would take to do this considering how fast paced the game is, you could have completed another 1-2 echos or a boss in your current spec.

The minimum skill level is for the most part almost useless, it only helps if you can reach the node you want to test out or complete a certain combination.

So your not supposed to play with different skills until you hit level 80ish? Why are we just not starting at level 80 then?

The whole idea of the leveling process is to get a feel for your character and to learn each skill. The fact that it’s easy is not a bad thing because as for new players you probably don’t understand how everything works yet, hence the reason for wanting to try different skills. While this is still possible it definatly feels like you are being punished for doing so. Especially once you hit the 8-10 skill level mark.

Please search before making a post. It’s basic forum etiquette. There have been dozens of threads about this, there did not need to be another.
