are we able to play multiplayer now? because i saw at steam mp will come at mid beta?
No MP for now, they will release it when they feel it is ready. No precise ETA so yeah expect it mid beta so that you dont get disappointed.

The characters that we make now are they going to be useable in the multiplayer or will we have to start over to take that character to multiplayer
Pretty sure I read that when they bring up MP servers you will have to start over. The character you play now is considered to be offline. They do this to prevent cheated characters being brought into the game.
