Due to the release issues I think it’s worth bringing this up now, cosmetics should be available in the full client offline mode. And hear me out on this:
The reason we do not get cosmetics in the offline mode has been stated that it’s tied to the purchase and the account information, but clearly there are also now two “offline” modes. The current full client offline mode which merely means your characters are not connected to the servers but everything else about the client, including chat, is. And the fully offline version, which has no connection.
If the full client offline mode, which maintains a connection to the servers in some way, was able to do a simple check against purchases and “cache” that information then you could easily allow cosmetics in the offline section of the game for players that purchased, while still not having them in the true offline mode.
What do you mean they are not available in single player online?
The worst that could happen is those who play offline hacking and making use of ALL the paid cosmetic assets and online players wondering why they bother paying for mtx online when they can just play offline and get all mtx for free.
3 years ago somebody made post on reddit about problems with this trough API code wich let people pirate not even skins for free but whole game. They maybe dont figure out how to defend game against that and its why they dont wanna make moves to offline mode.
Offline players would already be able to do this. Since offline players would have full access to customize the game however they saw fit. Restricting cosmetics from offline doesn’t do what you think it does. And the game could easily only download the assets for cosmetics you have purchased online.
He means the “offline” mode available in the “online” client. There are two version of offline mode. Full offline client offline mode with zero online content, and the online client offline mode with chat and online features. The second is the one I am concerned about in my post.
I’ve written about it here before in a similar post. The only way to do it would be if they put the existing purchasable items and future purchasable items separately on the steam store, adding them one at a time and marking which are for offline and which are for online. Thus people would have to buy these things separately. But when buying one thing, they would also get the other thing. So it wouldn’t be one physical item “programming code with textures or whatever you want to call it” but two
There is never only one way to do anything. There is always a multitude of ways to approach a problem to find a solution. The only thing that differentiates those solutions is what the end goals on, the methods chosen to do them, and the constraints placed on those methods.
Do you literally think that (server issues aside) someone is going to quit online just to be able to get free cosmetics? Like, you actually think this is something to be concerned about?
Here’s a thought…
I don’t know about consoles, but for steam users, that could be done through Steam inventory. See if the linked Steam account is legitimate and them send a Not Tradable, Not Marketable item to it that the game could “read” and enable in game. Something like GGG did for PoE. IDK if that could be possible but… Who knows?!
I only realised I couldn’t use cosmetics in the offline-online mode after I bought them. Such a shame. Either fix your game loading issues or make cosmetics available for the “offline but online” mode.
I would buy cosmetics if available for true offline. There’s nothing stopping them from making your purchase give you an untradable Steam item like POE does, that the game can read and grant you the cosmetic. Otherwise I won’t ever be buying any cosmetic because I won’t play online. I don’t want to be bound by the servers or my internet, if I can help it.
