Not sure I understand this modifier

While looking over Frostbite Shackles on the item database (thanks again, Dammit) I noted just how confused I was when reading

“+1% Ward Retention per 1% uncapped Cold Resistance”

I’m not sure I understand what “uncapped cold resistance” means. I can see it going two different ways, but I don’t know if either is correct. First, it gives 1% retention for every point of cold res as long as your resistance is under the 75% cap, maxing out at a 74% bonus to ward retention. The other interpretation I see is that the ward retention benefit itself has no cap, meaning that while you only have the resistance benefit of 75% protection against cold damage (within how resists work in LE, of course), you still gain unlimited benefit for any overcapped cold resist.

Are either of these interpretations accurate and, if so, which?

Thanks in advance for educating me on this.

I’m not an expert but the way I understood it was any number over the 75% cold resistance cap is the same number you get as ward retention. So if you have 75% cold resistances you get 0 ward retention. If you have 100% cold resistance (75 cap and 25 over) then you have 25% ward retention. If you have something like 500 cold resistance (75 cap and 425 over) you have 425 ward retention.

It’s 1% for each 1% of Cold Resistance, ignoring the 75% cap.

So if you have 155% Cold Resistance, its 155% Ward Retention.

Thanks, guys. Appreciate the help.

I always thought “uncapped” is when you have less than the resistance cap(75%) and everything above is called overcapped.

No.

If you have 155% cold resist, it gets “capped” at 75% by game rules. But its still 155%. If enemies hit you with Resistance Shred (say, for 60%), you’re still at 95% (which still gets capped at 75%). Which is the main reason you can go over the 75% cap.
