Non-empowered Lagon just one-shot me and I'm depressed

so…non-empowered monolith Lagon just 1-shotted me AND all my minions. I have 72% lightning res, 102% way over cap cold res, and 1341 health. lvl 70 (he’s lvl 75) why did I Die D:

Resistance over cap does absolutely nothing and the bosses are designed to one shot. You are supposed to dodge the very obvious windup attacks.

If Lagon was that simple we would not see at least one post each day about how hard he is. He as multiple attacks and it is not clear for everyone which telegraph is for which attack and whether he will beam to the left or to the right. I guess for many it really takes practice. I for example usually do the entire monolith before eventually finishing off Lagon.
Because it also depends on how quickly you can down him. The longer the fight takes the higher the chances are that you miss the one single one-shot which kills you.
I would expect this to be extra nasty with minions because you not only have to take care about yourself but also actively manage all your minions because otherwise you lose all your damage. So perhaps this (managing you minions) is also something you need to improve.
So my advice would be:

  1. Keep on going with the remaining monoliths and comeback later.
  2. Try to learn the fight and the mechanics. Because otherwise he will eventually one-shot you.
  3. Improve your active minion management, this might also improve you entire game in general because your minion will attack whomever you want and not wonder around attacking random trash.
  4. Check for your class and build whether you have some way to significantly reduce DOT damage, because that is, to my knowledge, what Lagon dishes out.

Lagon has two one-shot attacks - the beam and the moon strike.
The moon strike has ~ 1.5 seconds charge up, where a moon appears on the floor.
The beam is very telegraphed.
For both skills, Lagon’s eye turns red - the biggest giveaway that it is time to move.

With squishy minions, the fight is certainly a bit more challenging.

My advice: the beam can’t hit you if you stand down on the stairs close to his barrier. My skeleton archers and mages could hit Lagon perfectly fine, though.

But how did you die? Tanking the smash and beams almost anyone would die.

Ah Horus,
that was really good information, I did not know the telegraph with the eye. Usually I am in full stress mode when it comes to Lagon.
How would I know whether he turn to the left or to the right? Nothing sucks more than realinzing you decided for the false corner and are done. And does not seem to be that simple as in that he turns to the opposite corner.

AFAIK your character’s current position when he starts to use the skill determines from where to where he uses the beam, so you have some/full control of how it goes. Not sure if minions can interfere with his pattern.

There are 2 ways if you are to be pushed to the corner: you have a traversal skill ready that makes you immune to damage, or you just walk down the stairs a bit. Works better on the left side of the fight.

Its an absolute garbage fight with almost no space to move and the telegraphs are very vague but there is a safe cheese spot in the left corner. Use it and you will most likely be fine.
I see you capped lightning and cold which also helps.
You need to avoid a lot of stuff in phase 2, its not as one shotty but you need to move around a lot.
You dont have to do this part of the campaign if you dont really want to or you can do monoliths to level and gear up and do him later.

edit: I see it wasnt campiagn, power up more, look for spec without pets or items that make your pets way more tanky, they wont move out of the way from boss massive dmg attacks.

It’s actually a great fight that most people like the design of. His moves are not subtle in the least, it’s very very obvious what his next attack is. The fight is a dance, and it’s easy to learn the moves.

That worked!
First thing I did today after logging in was Lagon and I killed him on the first try.
My strategy was simple:

  1. Stand next to the tentacle (right of it on the left side, left of it on the right side) and apply damage while enduring Lagon’s bashes.
  2. As soon as his eye turns red move to the other position. Note: Next time I need to disable/hide the minimap because it obstructs the eye when I am on the left side and he is on the right.

That basically was it. One time, while on the right side I was caught by surprise by the beam and barely made it down the stairs, something which never occured to me before (Geez).

Well done, I’m glad I could help

My first character was a Runemaster that had some trouble getting past this fight.
My second was a Warlock who just facetanked the whole fight, including every one-shot ability. Resistances were 70% lightning and 60% cold. Warlock seems a very good class atm.

I never used the stair trick (But have noted it now!) and have always just watched Lagon during the entire fight. It’s very obvious when he is winding up for a telegraphed attack and it is always where you are standing. I just move between tentacles with my minions and am rarely standing still.

Empowered Lagon is a bit of nightmare since his attacks happen a lot faster. Especially in the second phase where he spams his tidal waves.

I dont think he ever targets the minions from personal experience. He doesn’t need to as his attacks will often hit them all if they aren’t moving with you.

Update: I swapped to an axe with like 97% reduced damage from crits. It greatly lowered my DPS but…in phase 1 it was bugged where I could back up farther and had more space. O.o

Phase 3 was easy because I just killed so fast even with the worse weapon.

Thanks to all for advice!

BTW first time I died to the beam attack.

He is though, it’s a very mechanical fight, there are 2 attacks that are telegraphed that you need to avoid & one that is also telegraphed but only good to avoid.

That’s part of the mechanic. If you’re to one side of the arena when he wiggles his head around & his eyes go read, you need to run to the other side of the platform as he’ll do his eye beam on the original side. That’s the entire mechanic.

Yup, that’s the point of mechanical fights.

That’s what the sweeping eye beam does, yes, but you’re not supposed to tank it, you’re supposed to avoid it. Some uber-tanky builds might be able to tank it but that’s not the intention of the fight.

This is a bug & not intended functionality. I’d expect it would be fixed at some point.

Glowy red eyes & his head either rearing back or ducking down is “vague”?

Chill is your friend, as is making sure Frenzy isn’t an active modifier (or heal if not taken damage recently).

God I remember not checking the modifiers and having the “heal when not taken damage” one during a boss fight. That was straight up painful

I was able to kill empowered Lagon with my necrotic minions but man that took a few tries. My build didn’t have any access to chill.
