New player feedback

Hi! I’m a long time gamer (PoE among many other things) that recently started playing Last Epoch. I’m liking the game and I love a lot of the things you already did, such as the crafting system, the “what killed you” message, the in-game loot filter and many more. While I still have a lot of game to go through and still haven’t reached or tested the end-game, here are some things that I think can be improved about the early game or more general things:

New player experience

Not all classes are as easier to start with. I tried the Sentinel, Rogue, Acolyte and Mage. The Mage was great until lvl 15 when it started dying to everything (now I know I should play it from further away and use wards, but that was the feeling at first). With the Rogue I picked a bow, but the damage seemed lackluster against the rest, and it kind of lacked a good AOE skill, so it’s still level 6 xD. The only one of this I have actually played is the Sentinel (following a guide, Void Knight by now) and the rest are still low level, so I’m not talking about the actual classes, just their start.

Introduce crafting earlier (and better). I think around level 15 would be good, definitely should be before fighting the level 25 boss. I saw that there is a quest, but is after that and is just kind of “there is crafting!”. A step-by-step side quest before that gives you a good item could be good (think the blacksmith in Skyrim).

Remove all respect penalties until level 25. This is probably the main thing I think should be changed. Respeccing passives is kind of fine, but respeccing skills is SO punishing at low levels, which is when you want to test the most. I ended up just deleting my lvl 15 Mage and making another one because after a wrong respect it had really low power vs what my new Mage has at the same level (I know that I could have just farmed some map with the old one to gain exp, but it felt really slow). I think that until level 25 the skills should respect at their max level, so that you can try without pressure, and then have some pop-up at 25 clarifying that this would no longer be the case (basically just change the “Minimum Specialized Level” progression to match the leveling of skills until that point).

Game

Don’t reset the map on TP. I read that this is temporary, but just to reinforce that’s really annoying to go to the town to sell something and when you are back every monster has respawned. I’m currently trying to avoid using TPs unless is the start of a zone :p. Also, this kind be abused by farming something that appears in the same place.

Don’t remove TP on waypoint to another area. I’m guessing this is related to the one before, but if you use a TP, go to town, and then forgot you had a TP and use the Waypoint, then the TP disappears.

Select quest to track. This would mean that I can select which quest or quests the map shows. Sometimes when I want to do “old” side quests the map still shows the guides for the main quest.

Login in the last town you’ve been in. I don’t know about the endgame yet, but when leveling is really annoying to log-in in at the End of Time since I kind of have to remember what was I doing by looking at all the eras. Logging in the last town I’ve been in would do this much easier.

Stashes in all towns. Similar to before, there are places with vendors and waypoints but no stashes. I think all this places should have one, since theoretically I can just teleport to a place with a stash, but it’s a waste of time.

Going downwards is annoying. Here I’m not actually telling what to do because nothing is easy xD, but just so you know, when you go straight down and there are monsters there, it’s kind of messy.

UI

Show “timers” for all the different buffs related to the skills. This is weird because it seems to show in some cases and not in others. For example, when I use Lunge I see an icon indicating Initiative, but when I use Smite I can’t see anything about Righteous Flurry

Change the “Leave Game” name for something else. Basically, the current name doesn’t really match what that button does. Something like “Go to Character Selection” would be better. Also, the confirmation can be bad for someone who is trying to get out of being killed in-game, but it’s probably better in all the other scenarios.

Map zoom keybinding. I think it would be useful to zoom in and out of maps a bit easier some times.

Allow us to change the order of stash tabs. This is kind of self-explanatory. Love the stash search :p.

Add a confirmation button to Passives and Skills. Basically to prevent adding the wrong skill or passive due to a misclick. The best way would be similar to PoE, where you can add as many “phantom” points you want (and have), and then a button that allows you to actually assign them all at the same time.

Accessibility

Add subtitles to the videos (at least in English). My first language isn’t English, and while I mostly understand it, subtitles help a lot. Obviously this would also be great for people with hearing loss and, once translated, people who doesn’t know English.

Change or add some way to skip or disable the rift screen. I mean the “loading” screen when you enter a rift. Personally I think it is a bit too trippy, and while I don’t have epilepsy or something like that I would like to skip it if I could. Also, some times you are actually teleporting inside the same map, so then is even more skippable.

Nothing more, keep the good work!

Hey there,

welcome to the LE community.

I just want to touch on some things you said:

Now the question is, is this a good or a bad thing?

I personally really like that the classes feel so different right from the get-go already.
Sentinel can facetank almsot everything, mage is more “class-cannon” but does insane amount of damage early etc.

Did you use and try puncture? You unlock it with lvl 5 and espeically with a bow it’s probably the single best AoE clear skill while playing (across all classes)

It requires some good positioning sometimes, but it’s incredible rewarding.

Agreed, while LE is not as daunting as other games and all the different game systems get slowly introduced to the player, some of them(like crafting) are not very well explained early.

I think the whole early game experience will get reworked anyway at some point.

We already got major overhauls of some of the early chapters and i think one of the devs mentioned that quests rewards and player guiding will also be improved.

It’s just a matter of time.

This is a really hot-discussed topic all around.

Disclaimer: Keep in mind my opinion is coming from a more veteran player’s perspective

I think alot of people overvalue having 1 or 2 skill points in a skill vs 3-4 skill points in a skill.
Yes it helps a little bit and sometimes you might lose some really strong nodes if you respec.

But you really don’t need maximum possible allocatable points for smoothly going through the story.
If you respec a skill to try something different, you will lose some power, so you will feel like getting weaker for a short amout of time, until your skil lcatched up again.
But overall you will still be way stronger than you need to be, to successfully go through the story.

As you mentioned, this is just a temporary due to technical limitations.
TPing back to town to sell things is not very valuable anyway currently, so you really don’t need to do it anyway.

This maybe will change in the future.

This is already WIP since many patches.
They in fact just added a bunch of new buff indicators with the latest patch.

This will definitely get better.

But the devs also mentioned, that they need to be careful, to not add too many buffs, since it can unecessarily overload the UI.

There are alot of buffs that fall into the category of “would be nice to see how long the buff takes”, but they actually don’t change decisionmaking or how you play.

So some buffs are simply not needed to be displayed.

For all the remaining points i don’t have any opinion about or just agree.

Great feedback from a fresh perspective.

Fair enough :p, I think that I mostly felt this because of the Rogue, since I expected it to be a glass cannon DPS but I felt like the sentinel (tank) did more damage with Warpath. However, you are right that I didn’t test puncture as much, I will go back to the Rogue at some point :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m guessing that maybe I could have crafted better items to improve the char, and also is not a fair comparison when, for example, with this new Mage I know more than with the one before. However, there are some skills passives that improve a lot the skill itself and, for that reason, the levelling. For example, my Mage is level 19 and I have 3 specializations. My main skill this time is Elemental Nova at level 8, and having Arcane Projection on it made my everything a lot beter; however, if I were to respec at this level in Elemental Nova it would be level 3 and I would still need another 3 points to even have Arcane Projection. While I do see where you are coming from, I think that at lower levels the loss of power when respeccing is too much.

Great to know that many of the other things are a WIP

Thanks for answering!

You can also respec single points, you do not need to respec the whole tree at once.
So if you want to try something different, but want to keep a certian node, just respec some single points

Also, what i see alot of newer players doing, is respeccing many skills at once.

If you always keep one strong skill and just experiment with the 2nd, 3rd and later 4th and 5th specialisation slot, you always have one strong skill. Once the other skills catched you can respec the other skill too.

I did some of this too, but I was mostly refering to re-specializing in new skills :stuck_out_tongue:

Yep, I think this was my undoing , but still, I think that is normal for a new player to want to do something like this

Will do :grimacing:

Just to make sure, i did not mean do devalue any of your opinions or statement, i just simply wanted to give you some alternative ways, to make some of the consequences not as grave.

I just think that the skill and respec system in LE is in a very good spot.

Yeah, don’t worry! I liked to read your input and I can see how at higher levels or with more knowledge of the games the respeccing might be a non-issue. I just wanted to point out that the current way can lead to some “feel bad” scenarios for new players (at least for me :p).

Thanks and gl!

There is a very basic reference to crafting close to the beginning, when in the Council chamber. I’m not sure which quest it is precisely, but when you start one of these quests you have a pop-up telling you that the F key can bring you to the forge.
This could be expanded and become a real quest, because the moment in the leveling is good. I don’t remember what level we are at that moment, but I’d say a bit under 15. And if this quest is properly expanded, the one in the Outcasts Camp could be removed.

I just finished my first time through the story and would like to aggree to this

I’m actually surprised that something like this is not present in a game that goes in so much detail for a lot of mechanics, yet not for a basic thing like this. I was often looking for the chat to find out what any NPC, boss, enemy had just said as it’s not always clear to hear, especially when your native English speaking.
