New(-ish) ARPG player feedback from first session

Hello,

First, I’m not sure if this is the right place or manner/format to provide feedback; so if not please let me know

Second, to provide a little context, I haven’t played an RPG in decades, pretty much since my brother and I co-op’d Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 1 & 2 back on the original Xbox. That was one of our favorite series along w/ Halo, and we never quite found a game like it since. Further, I recently (~3 months) switched back to PC from console and usually play FPS games like Destiny 2, Borderlands, and CS2.

Third, I haven’t pre-ordered a game since I got burned by watch_dogs and swore: never again. But after trying Diablo 4 briefly for its last free weekend, combined with the fact that a bunch of my online friends played it at launch and had a blast, I really wanted to give a modern ARPG a real go. Since my friends that play Diablo IV haven’t touch it much since Season 1, and having watched Raxxanterax’s videos talking about how good this game is, I got a steam gift card today and immediately wanted to give Last Epoch a shot.

Further, as somebody who’s worked in the tech field for over 20 years, gaming for much longer, I knew there would be bugs/issues/potential improvements; so I figured I’d keep a running list during my first session and provide them for potential improvement.

Anyways, enough w/ the preamble, here is my list:

  • e-mail verification doesn’t update in the port from unverified to confirmed until you logout and log back in
  • geforce experience optimization settings aren’t detected properly nor set when selecting optimize
    • tbh, i was surprised it was detected so good start!
  • nvidia overlay not working (specifically instant replay!!!)
    • i’m going to file this as a bug as well
  • alt+z is defaulted to toggle tooltips for items on ground, but should be changed to something else as this is the default for the nvidia overlay
    • i’m going to note this in the bug report for the nvidia overlay not working
  • lack of subtitles!!!
    • this is usually a larger issue for me, but to be honest i feel like i’m in a george rr martin universe with all these characters/factions/gods? thrown at me without any context so i’ve just stopped trying to pay close (read: much of any) attention to the story and focus on gameplay at the moment.
  • some tutorial pop-ups disappear too quickly; while others force you to close them. not only is this inconsistent, but i’m literally missing some of them in combat (and without instant replay i couldn’t record them to see what i missed😞
  • search in the game guide isn’t good
    • e.g. i get a weapon that mentions “non-channelled melee.” I have no idea what non-channelling is so i open the guide and search for it. a bunch of hits, but none of the results even have the word channel in them😞the game guide is an amazing feature that truly needs to be in more games and i’ll keep trying it, but in this case i had to resort google.
  • cannot change time format to 24h clock?
  • show fps button does nothing
  • overlay opacity slider doesn’t work in game…tbh i can’t seem to find a consistent way to change this; trying exiting to character selection and even restarting the game…it’ll just not work 90% of the time and then randomly one time it will work😕
    • ok, upon further investigation, it appears that the slider is just not being updated, but the opacity is. makes it very difficult to adjust
  • logging into portal.lastepoch.com a couple hours after setting up my account and verifying e-mail, my email address field was missing.
    • logging out and back in fixed this issue

Overall, even though I’m progressing very slowly (moving and fighting with m&k is taking some time to get used to ¯_(ツ)_/¯ and i’m going to try controller for my next session) I’m having fun and looking forward to playing more!

HTH, and again, if this isn’t the best format or there is a better place to provide this type of feedback please let me know!

UPDATE: just finished my second session which ended up being ~12h!

Since it had been awhile since my first session I decided to just delete my character, and start fresh with the goal of really trying to learn m&k. And I’m happy to say I feel a lot more comfortable now (hit level 21 marksman today) and will be sticking w/ this input method for the foreseeable future. further, this allowed me to get into the story/lore more and the tutorial popups seem to reliably stay up on screen now so :+1: there! I did retest the show fps button and map overlay opacity slider and they are still bugged as described; above.

The only issues I ran into today were:

  • some (IMO basic) topics I was searching for in the guide did not have results. specifically, haste, and some other entries that i didn’t take note of. Clearly, this means I’ve learned how the search function works now and understand what no results looks like ¯_(ツ)_/¯. Further, I was able to find most of what i needed if not in the guide, then via the skill tree “alt for more info.” although, I did notice some of those that are listed at the bottom of the overlay were not working, and for those I wasn’t able to find easily via that workaround, google was quick to provide answers (usually here on the forums or on the subreddit
  • after clearing a search in the guide w/ the x button, the navigation text is mangled. the workaround I found was to close and re-open the guide and the navigation table seems to properly reset.
  • spoken dialog will just stop during some of the npc interactions part-way through. presumably this is just missing/known, and didn’t really affect me much as i reading it anyways
  • open mtx panel keybind does nothing
  • clicking on cosmetic store button in main menu does nothing
    • the workaround for these two issues is to use the open mtx shop keybind; which does work properly
  • abandoned hive hitboxes are almost non-existent (at least using a bow or detonating arrow)
    • this may be intended? seemed very punishing though.
    • i noticed it with the decaying spriggand (sic?) as well, but it seems to only happen if we’re on an incline and i can see the arrows hitting, but no damage.
    • with the silent disciples it was noticeable, but not nearly as bad; and this is where i started to think maybe it was intentional?
  • something i forgot about in my initial post, but noticed again today, was that when clicking on the feet/movement icon on the action bar, upon mousing over the three option pop-ups there is nothing in overlay (empty boxes).
  • not all destructible environmental objects (e.g. barrels) seem to work when i’ve selected the feet+barrel->x option .
    • this mainly is right next to load zones and seems to work fine away from them.
    • noticed this specifically in the beginning and end of the sheltered wood and the forsaken trail.

nothing was a showstopper or even too frustrating to be honest, and i was able to enjoy every moment of my session today; which speaks volumes to me given my comments in my initial post regarding pre-ordering/early-access. the only thing that i really missed was the nvidia overlay for instant replay (as mention in the initial post).

honestly, great work EHG and once i hit endgame, if everything continues to be this smooth, i’ll definitely be recommending it on steam and trying to get some of my friends to pick up as well  :+1:

HTH, and if anybody has any questions, comments, or concerns; please let me know!

This is the right place to give feedback and yours at least to me are very respectful and concerned to make the game better for everyone

Welcome to our community and happy gaming, it’s truly a great game but with lot of things to be polished yet.

Many of them the Devs are aware and some of them will be addressed in the massive 1.0 upgrade on February when it will be the official release of the game.

Just a piece of advice,
Marksman is one of the masteries with most problems right now, so you might encounter some bug with skills and projectiles not working properly.

Welcome aboard! To add to what @eliel77 said. there is some hope to this though. 1.0 full release is scheduled mid February. There’s a LOT being added but one thing the Devs have said is they are doing a ton of work on bug squashing. So hopefully, some of these projectile issues will really get cleared up by then. The pain of them should, Eterra willing, only be for about 6 more weeks.
