I realized in the forum or while watching some streams that people (including me) don’t really know when a new chapter starts. After playing couple of hours and leveling different characters an experienced player somehow knows that he is in a different chapter.
It would be cool if you could display the start of a new chapter with a little title while playing: Something like ‘‘CHAPTER 7 - The Fall of Heorot’’ (just an example). The best example i have how you could display this is how you accept and start quests in Skyrim, when after a certain npc dialogue the quest name appears in the middle of the screen with a specific sound or theme music.
I don’t really need a cinematic act trailer like we have in D3. Wolcen also did a good job with this with a blackscreen after finishing an act.
I think this would give the game more depth, quality and identity while playing through the story.
Noooo! This was / is awesome! It would be nice to have such great cinematic
But I get your point. For an Indi studio with the first game backed on kickstarter, I gues there are better things to sink the money than cinematic.
Imho it just has to fit the style. I liked the EA trailer. Also the introduction sequences are absolutely ok and fit the style.
It would be nice to have some story driving cinematic/ cut scenes. This way you would define the chapters and also could add some more story and character to bosses.
Actually, is distinguishing the chapters really important?
I mean when the team talks about incorporating chapters in this early access, I just saw it as them breaking the campaign into chunks of story that they will be introducing over the course of beta. But that the completed story is really a single continuous narrative. As it is now, I really dont see any functional purpose for distinguishing the story chapters.
Definitly not important in a way of: ‘‘i need this now because otherwise the game is unplayable and i can’t enjoy the story’’.
I’m just used to different arpg’s where they strictly seperate the acts in a certain map overlay. In LE you open the map and you see one big world where the whole story takes part, you are right. In PoE they probably could not make one big screen for all the different acts that’s why they seperated them in the quest UI. I think this makes it easier to clarify in which part of the story you are currently in.
As i think about it, i realize Grim Dawn is also not showcasing when a new act starts, because they also use the big world overlay.
You are right, it’s still beta, and like you said they first need to add chunks of the story parts together before polishing everything around it. We also can’t expect highly developed cinematics from an indie team like a multi million dollar company can do it.
Besides the fact if it’s important or not, would you like to see such a display to clarify where you currently are (maybe we have to think the way how a new player experiences his first playthrough) and would this make the game prettier for you?
To clarify: I also really like those cinematics, and i wish we have something like this in LE. What i wanted to say with ‘‘i don’t really need a cinematic’’ is that we can’t expect from an indie team during the beta phase that they focus on highly developed cinematics. Core elements like Multiplayer, Lootfilter, Dps tooltips, Rogue, Masteries first…after this you could maybe focus on something like cinematics.
And maybe a chatbot that auto-replies to certain subjects such as how to access the college, “what do you mean there’s no multiplayer”, “why can’t I choose the Rogue/Rouge”, “can I respec my mastery, no I didn’t read what the game told me when I chose it”?
Let’s not underestimate the skills and abilities of EHG. Yes, it is an Indie studio without unlimited money and capacity.
But if you wanna build a new IP you have to do more than just deliver a rock solid base. The presentation is a big factor and should not be treated as if it would serve no real purpose.
Introducing the world, the realm, the lore, characters - friends and foes - is a key factor to introduce new players to the game.
And it’s not about a million dollar production. It’s about creating immersion the best way possible. Make people curious Make them click. It’s all about a good presentation.
Btw. Just to get it out of the way. My comment about the importance of highlighting the chapter wasn’t a direct response to your OP.
On topic. I won’t mind cinematically or display to signal chapters transitions. But I was just asking if it was intended that the end and beginning of a chapter be significant. Because transitioning between chapters doesn’t feel significant to me. And I thought that was ok.
I know i know , i also didn’t take it personal. You made a good point and i like to discuss a certain topic with different opinions. You made me realize gd doesn’t have this at all aswell and the game is completely fine to me. Just wanted to see how important this is for other players
