Hello i would like to see more affix’s for converting one resistance type into another.
As I’m sure is obvious this desire comes from a desire to min max with stacking stats for crazy outcomes.
Ideally it would read along the lines of “All (x) resistance is converted then added to current (y) resistance”
Ex. “All Fire resistance is converted then added to current Void resistance”
Ex. of before and after stat use, Prior to stat 200 fire res and 80 void res, post item with affix 0 fire res 280 void res.
I personally don’t think this affix should be easy to get as its more so for end game stuff but still useful for all. Probably best to limit to one base item like belts then probably gate it behind RNG as a corrupted stat.
This would be a so-called ‘detrimental’ Affix in 99% of cases, conversion of a specific resistance to another leads to being defenseless against the converted base one, this is not positive.
Hence it goes against the core design philosophy of only implementing positive Affixes, with only a few exceptions where one might turn negative. This one is the other way around, nigh universally negative with only a few positive outcomes.
So overall not a good implementation unless the whole Affix system, acquisition system and crafting systems is adjusted in very very major ways.
Also it would be called ‘Converts ‘x’% of ‘y’ reisstance to ‘z’ resistance’ since it would thus allow scaling to happen.
What you wrote is double-dipping in the description. You convert it (hence it’s done) so you don’t need to describe that it’s added to the target, that’s a given. Unless you make it special and want it for example to double the converted resistance, which would be a trade-off type of Affix, which is closer to the existing design-philosophy but still leads to more detrimental then positive outcomes and hence is to be avoided.
Also i provided an example of how i wanted it to work my converting 200 fire res to void and resulting in o fire res. Examples provided are always written in chicken noodle soup, and are there to try and provide an example of what I’m thinking. Wording and desired result may need editing but i try to be flexible.
A) A unique, not a baseline Affix.
B) Not ever a downside, it makes you ‘immune’ (Edit: Yes, it’s converted, but you’ll never take Void damage anymore, that’s what I mean) against a specific damage type.
And you’re missing the point here.
If you introduce such a universal Affix then it needs to exist for ‘every resistance converted into every other resistance’.
Now you go along and find a perfectly rolled item, a dream-drop! And you run ‘Orian’s Eye’ in your setup… but that item has ‘Fire resistance converted to Void reistsance’.
Now what happens?
You got ‘0’ fire resistance.
You never take Void damage, hence all your Void resistance is worthless.
And in the situation without Orian’s Eye?
No matter which Affix you get, you always have now a single damage type you got ‘0’ resistance for.
Is this a thing you would actually want to drop for you hence? Or is it one you would want to avoid in general unless you’ve acquired this one specific item, searching for this one specific conversion hence?
Ok just because you can’t see it does not mean something has no use.
I never said it was limited to certain affix’s, yes ideally all res could be applied. And before complaints about affix clutter it would only be one new affix it’s just that said affix has like 40 possible outcomes; fire to void, cold to fire, nec to light,… and so on.
Having one res permanently being no higher then 0%(can still go neg res with debuffs) is downside as it basically makes one damage type a basic DOA situation.
There’s lots of examples where amount of resistance matters. Acid flask, witch fire, wildfire amulet, null body , nec res to ward gen. There are lots of examples where this idea has a use. Just look past meta cookie cutter builds and the default brainless cap res get dmg red diction where u can stack ward or hp etc…
When you wear this, there’s never a downside (unless you don’t have enough fire res). At most you have useless void res that isn’t being used.
Whereas with your affix idea, there is always a downside for 99.99% of the builds because you’ll be left with 0 fire res and only a few edge cases will be able to deal with that. In fact, I don’t think there is even anything in the game right now that can offset that and turn it into a positive stat.
So Orian’s Eye can still be used by 100% of the builds, whereas your affix can only be used by a select few that will have to be catered to as well.
Having damage received conversion will likely also achieve your goal (you can just not use affixes for those damage types and focus instead on the type you want to boost) without it being a downside to everyone else.
Ok so the more words and examples I use the more people say it’s too restrictive or complain more over explained.
I used unique neck as a know and quick example of resistance conversion not an exact example of what I’m asking them to add. As if I could provide an exact current example of exactly what I wanted it wouldn’t need to be added as it’s already there.
If I don’t provide a cost/downside/neg (how ever u view it) users on forums are quick to rip me apart with comments like op/broken/power creep/ not balanced… Etc. would it be amazing if it was something broken like cleaver where it makes your int = your str so you can double dip an affix into two affix’s. and of course I would want that, but history on here shows othered don’t want just positive stuff. That or I can be paranoid and just say some people just want to dump on whatever I post.
Dmg redirect is not the same as what I wanted which is stat conversion. My most recent build that can use this ideally specifically is my witch fire warlock using the wildfire amulet. There’s lots amulet allows fire res to double dip and also provide ignite chance. If u know warlock at all u know ignite chance equals more with fire dmg. 1% ignite chance =10% more with fire damage, and currently I have around 1,300 ignite chance for what should be around 13,000 more with fire damage. Now as a side note I believe there is either a hidden more bonus cap or a hard diminishing return as the damage output does not match something with over 10k more dmg. In empowered and without trying to peak dmg it’s a 60k dmg tic every second.
Outgoing damage modifiers tend not to have caps without it being explicitly mentioned. But don’t forget that mobs in empowered monos have ~90% unavoidable DR. But as you stack more of a modifier (in a single place for the likes of more modifiers) there is natural diminishing returns (going from 0% more to 100% more doubles the damage, going from 1,000% more to 1,100% more only increases it by ~10%).
This would be better as an affix in a unique, which takes that into account or which uses this as a downside.
Having it as an affix (which isn’t just 1 affix, it’s 56 for all the possible permutations) will dillute the affix pool with an affix that is undesired by almost everyone.
If you have an item and you’re using Redemption or Chaos hoping to hit a useful affix, almost every affix is either useful or at least useless. This affix is actually harmful for most builds, so having it land would be an instant brick almost always.
As I said, it would be better to have “x% of \<element\> damage taken as \<other element\>”. It does the same and it’s not an instant brick when crafting.
It stays non-feasable in LE. In another game, with another core itemization setup? Sure. In LE? Breaks the game, plain and simple.
It mandates the usage of a incoming damage conversion modifier of some kind to counteract the significant downside it causes. Hence it’s nigh universally a damaging Affix.
Those are simply not allowed to exist in a core pool.
As people stated, as a unique - which is why I pointed out uniques specifically - it plays no role. Those are individual hand-tailored items. Hence they’re not part of the ‘core Affix pool’.
So TLDR:
It’s fine on a unique.
It’s an awful idea in the core pool.
