Ok, Im not sure if this has been recognized or what but here is my issue.
My lightning blast does not chain whenever my preparation buff becomes available (every 3 seconds). This effectively makes my lightning blast worse than it would be normally without the buff. That doesn’t make sense to me.
I spend a lot of points (10) in preparation and a lot of points in lightning blast’s chain and related skills only to have them all negated when preparation becomes available.
Since the mage was apparently supposed to be a ranged character class why would there be a huge nerf detriment to the only range skill I decide to use. This not only reduces overall damage as i can only hit one target as opposed to potentially 5 or 6 but it deletes the strategy of having this as a ranged skill to hit enemy packs from range before they come close to me.
My question…Is there plans to fix this?
Thanks
This is a bug in all likelihood, please make a post in the bugs section of the forum.
I tried, however, I was unable to select bug category in category. Must be another bug…lol
First and foremost: Welcome to the LE Community!
I was not able to reproduce this, so it’s very likely to be a more complex interaction.
Also i do have a theory.
But to give you better feedback, it would be very helpful to get more details of your exact build, so either loading your character into the Last Epoch Build Planner would be helpful or provide screenshots of your skill spec trees.
Now my theory: Did you only spec “Arcing Power”?

This node only lets your Lightning Blast’s chain a number of times, depending on how many lightning blasts you have cast recently (last 4 seconds).
So your first cast will never chain, when you haven’t casted any other LB’s recently.
I did test the other chaining node “Chaining Lightning” in conjunction with “preperation” myself and it just worked fine.
This is not the case for me. I wait much more than 4 seconds. Then I stumble across a pack across the screen. By this time my preparation is up obviously. I take a shot and only hit one enemy…take another shot or two and then it chains. It never chains with preparation up but does when it isn’t. I died in HC a couple of times due to this so I know it’s not due to an exact peculiar build.
I will attempt to send you a copy when I have some time.
Thanks for your reply.
Hm, sounds weird.
It’s definitely not as easy as “Preperation is preventing LB to chain”, because for me it does not prevent it at all.
I would definitely want this to further be investigate and give the devs as much information as possible.
I also flagged your Post, so a moderator might move it to bug report section
Upon further testing on one out of every 4-5 shots the bolt does split into two arcs before hitting targets, but it does not chain from one target to another. And never hits more than two targets because it only splits into two arcs prior to hitting anything.
Procedure for testing:
I walk without shooting until preparation comes up and then take one shot at a pack from distance, then walk again until it prep comes up again and take one shot. I repeat this and it never chains. I have 4/4 points in arcing power.
Just a bit more information for clarification:
Is “Arcing Power” the only node you have specced for Chains, or do you also have points in “Chain Lightning”?
Also do you play with Divergence?
It would be really helpful to see a screenshot of your skill spec tree.
From your procedure you’re describing, it would make sense to not see any or just a few chains, IF “Arcing Power” is the onyl chaining node you took.
Just to be SURE.
Please re-read “Arcing Power” again.
It will only cause Lightning Blast to chain, for each Lightning Blast you have cast recently, up to a maximum.
4/4 arcing power ,1/1 surging influence, 1/1 closed circuit, 2 /4 volatile lightning, 1/5 frontloaded, 1/3 storm razor. Thats it. Mage lvl 25. Oh and 6 points in preparation.
So with that skill tree, it makes sense, that your Lightning Blast is not chanining, after a longer pause of not casting.
Just so we are on the same page. Lightning Blast does not chain baseline.
The only source of chaining you have in your set up is from Arcing Power, which only makes it chains after consecutive uses in the last 4 seconds, up to a maximum.
Ok, the wording is key. So what you are saying is I need to cast multiple times for it to chain multiple times. I misunderstood this. This doesn’t seem very good when you come across a pack after more than 4 seconds of not casting. It means that preparation will not be very useful as your first shot will only hit one target then preparation is gone for another 3 seconds. Often by the time you are chaining to multiple targets and prep rolls around again, the pack is on top of you. Leaving an apparent much bigger advantage for single cast large damage spells. Well ok, my apologies for misunderstanding and thank you for your help. I will find another skill to use instead.
It’s ok to misunderstand things.
Reading tooltips is very important and if the tooltip was not clear to you, that’s good feedback.
If the tooltip was clear enough, but you didn’t carefully read, you hopefully did learn from it and read tooltips more carefully.
In the bottom right, there is the Node “Chain Lightning”, which will give Lightning Blast up-front chains, but at a cost.
This might be more suited for what you are looking for, if you can handle the additional mana cost.
Yea thanks for the suggestion. This is how I incorrectly assumed it would work without the additional node.
I just got the game so I’ve been skimming over things in an attempt to learn quickly. As a result I haven’t been particularly thorough on my research. My apologies.
Another thing.
You actually do not need to stop casting for 3 seconds to wait until “Preperation” becomes ready again.
You could just spam Lightning Blast with “Arcing Power” and every 3 seconds a Lightning Blast will also be buffed by preperation.
Yea, I’m doing that. I was just taking one shot at a time to test.
I’m attempting to ramp up the chain ability before they get too close but in some cases it’s impossible…at least with the skill points I have allotted at this point. But I will give it an honest chance and add more points to see if it becomes as effective as I assumed it would be initially.
And again thanks for your help, and patience with my noobness.
