Multistrike + Smite is very janky to play - an improvement:

So I’ve been messing around with all sorts of paladin builds this patch, and I settled for a while on using multistrike and javelin to proc smite and fire burst. This build does great for the most part, but when it comes to single target it has a big problem.

The way the Multistrike node Hallowed Arsenal works currently is that it only replaces the extra swords (the ones that hit nearby enemies not initally hit by Multistrike) with smite. This feels obviously quite awful on single targets. Now, it is not a requirement to hit your target in order to proc a sword, so if you stand slightly away from your target and miss with the strike, you can still get a smite to cast that way. This makes single target useable, however you won’t be proccing fire burst, or building up stacks of armament.

I have a question for the devs here: is this intentional so that we can’t proc smite and fire burst at the same time? If so, I somewhat understand, but between this node and the warpath smite node it really feels like you’ve set the interaction to the point where it feels mechanically bad to play rather than balanced and fun.

I would make the suggestion that instead of the current interaction, could a node be added to cause a sword to always fall on a single target (in addition to the melee hit) but the initial hit damage becomes 0, or close to 0? I feel like this would enable this playstyle and make it super fun, without breaking any of the other interactions in the skill.

Imo Multistrike should hit primary targets by default. No node or anything. Without that much it just can’t feel nice to use or reach an acceptable baseline reliability. Even when it’s not worthless vs single target it will still be several times as efficient vs packs. Maybe the Smite spec will need a little nerf in exchange but the others need this just to be at all viable.

Yes it’s intended to function the way it currently does, presumably to reduce the single target damage of a skill that is intended to be multi-target.
