Hopefully someone with more knowledge can answer this for me… Do item level affix rolls increase with the level of the monolith? Meaning can items dropping from a level 90 monolith potentially roll higher affixes than items dropping from a level 80 monolith?
I just want to make sure that me running a lvl 90 monolith at char level 78 is really worth the trouble aside from the extra XP as far as item hunting goes.

Yes, area level will improve your drops, including a higher chance of getting exalted items.
Once you move to empowered monos, since they’re all area level 100, it’s corruption that will do that.
If you’re comfortable right now farming the top monoliths, you should consider moving on to empowered monos, the loot is much better there. You should ultimately aim at farming at least 300c+, preferably closer to 1k if your build can handle it.
Basically, you want to farm the highest possible content that you can handle somewhat comfortably. The higher the difficulty, the better the drops.
I don’t have enough life. My dps is decent at 100k unbuffed but I’m sitting at about 1300 life with 1000 ward. All max resist except physical at 50%. I’m still using a unique I got at level 7 for a helmet because the fire damage was so good. Also, being a flame reave spellblade it seems dual wield is the playstyle to shoot for but I got a 2h sword with +293 to fire damage that I’m also having a tough time replacing.
Just farm the highest content you feel comfortable farming.
If you have enough damage, you could consider replacing the weapon for a 1h one + shield. You’d do less damage, but you’d be tankier. That would depend on how much of a DPS loss it would be and if it would could still kill stuff easily at a higher difficulty.
If you’re MG you should consider buying some items. Even a couple of half-decent exalted items can improve your survivability and DPS a lot.
If you’re CoF, you should start doing prophecies to improve your drops.
Blessings are also a good way to improve your survivability, but it’s not really worth farming them on normal monos, since they’re much inferior to the empowered versions. But if you don’t have the right one, it might be worth chasing a basic version of them. The resist all blessing from the Emperor of Corpses and the armor/health ones might help you bridge the gap to the next step.
Also check every Nemesis you find. They’re a good source of exalted gear.
