I just logged back in after skipping the last major patch, since I really wanted to try the new mastery, and all that. Plus, it felt like there was a great deal of new mechanics and things I wanted to try!
However, I noticed that two of my characters are now missing. I’ve been playing the game since… I think 0.6 patch level, and have roughly 1500 hours in the game, so I do have a fair number of characters, but this was noteworthy because they were both level 100 characters, a necromancer and sorcerer.
Both are characters that I did play at the 0.9.0 patch, though the necromancer is a newer one. However, they were also probably two of my best geared characters, so the loss quite stings.
I’ve checked:
Online vs offline. I play only offline, but thought I’d check just to be sure.
Specific class list (just in case the list was cut off for some reason)
Not sure where else I can check.
Character specifics:
lvl 100 necromancer and lvl 100 sorcerer
Both wearing fair number of legendaries
Both offline characters
Both are non-ssf
Both softcore.
Like I said, it’s been at least 6 months since the last time I played, and they were both there the last time I played.
Is there any idea where they could have disappeared to?
Offline chars are only stored offline in the savegame folder on your local machine.
If anything changed - i.e. different login, reinstalled your machine etc, then the game likely cannot find the old savegames in the folder it expects. If you didnt make a backup, and the drive was cleared (formatted etc) then your offline chars could be gone forever.
Depending on how you played, Steam Cloud saves can also come into play here - i.e. it may be out of sync and your old saves may be only available through logging into Steam via a webbrowser and checking the remote storage - if you are lucky it could be there.
Savegames are typically in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Eleventh Hour Games
Hmm, yea, the character files are missing from that directory. I still have a whole bunch of my characters, it’s just that those two are missing. It’s a bit annoying because the necro especially was my highest corruption pusher, well over 400.
Haven’t done any reformats or anything like that, haven’t touched those files, heck, haven’t even uninstalled the game. But there’s a big gap between character file 6 and character file 21, a whole bunch missing.
Was there a change to the number of characters that you can have in total recently? I’ll check the steam file sync thing, too. Maybe it is a desync with cloud saving.
There hasnt been a local character limit change that I know - its effectively been unlimited as far as I am aware (never tested it myself).
Online since 0.9 has been restricted to 20 (I think this is purely for now, Mike mentioned they have “permission” to increase the limit but arent doing it just yet - I think thats probably to limit server resources during the beta). This shouldnt affect local chars.
Steam Cloud - it has caused a lot of problems for people in the past - I have it disabled purely because of issues of getting out of sync - especially if you have multiple steam accounts or use Steam on different systems. afaik, they have fixed a lot of things, but I simply dont trust anything but my own backups which I make almost before every playsession (yeah I have trust issues and I dont particularly want to lose 2k+ worth of playtime and drops).
There have been issues with savefiles if you named them the same as older chars but that probably doesnt apply to you in this case.
Also, check for backup files - you should have those, and it could be that the live file is corrupted but a backup may be working. They are plain text so you can open the files and check the char name to see if you can find which is your missing chars.
