Mike's Apology for the Season 5 Outage

Message from Mike, Game Director

Season 5 did not launch the way it should have, and I am sorry.

Server issues made the game difficult to play, or completely unplayable, for many of you at launch. That is our failure, and we take responsibility for it. This was a new issue that we now understand, and we are confident in the steps needed to prevent it from happening again. I am grateful to the team for working quickly to restore service.

I also want to be direct about the First Blood Race. Many racers lost progress or were unable to compete fairly because of these issues. We will not be restarting the Race. Restarting it would require taking the game offline and performing an experimental mass data migration, which carries too much risk of creating further problems. I know this is not the answer many of you wanted, and I am sorry for the frustration this causes.

We will share a clear plan for how we prevent this from happening again, including how we can better protect race characters if an issue occurs during a future event.

Thank you for your patience, and for sticking with us.

Mike
Game Director, Last Epoch

Apologizing is a great virtue, but… it is still impossible to connect to the servers from Türkiye and the Middle East. We haven’t seen any statement regarding this yet—what exactly do you plan to do?

Edit:(Some players are able to access the game by setting their Windows language to English and their region to the USA. However, for some other players, the game does not launch at all and fails to reach the login screen. There are also players who can connect by changing their date format.)

The ‘experimental mass data migration’ for such an event should’ve been plainly spoken handled beforehand to have the option. The race is plainly spoken worthless because of it, competition and fairness? Yeah… so much for the basis of it I guess.

I haven’t been able to get into the first city for 3 hours now… I’m upset.

It’s okay. These people who cant login clearly need to get jobs. LOL

I just got home. Downloaded the patch. Loaded it up. Got in NP. 2:30 PM Pacific time

Not how this works, flower.

In aRPG culture, for as long as I know it, it’s very standard practice for enthusiastic players to schedule pto/vacation/leave or any other kind of day off they can for launch days.

total garbage game…nice waste of time. I used to enjoy playing when it worked and when i thought you guys were gonna finish it. You guy killed a good game.. nice job. Sell out is a life long title. And so is corpo scum.

As much as I was annoyed yesterday, I know that network/backend stuff is always a lot more complicated than it seems. Thank you for being so quick to fix it.

I had work and got home played just fine minus the horrible load screens which is nothing new sadly.

W for us with jobs xD

I have a suggestion for race events - which will mitigate network issues and allow more people to take part at the same time.

Instead of a straight timed race - which favours people with nothing else to do but play and don’t have issue - design events which allow everyone to take part over a period of time.

e.g. “Lowest-level solo-character-found to kill X before ‘x’ days are over”

Life is sometimes a journey - not always a race…

Not that it matters but the race was a failed attempt from the start. Even with a perfect launch, the person who logs in first has the advantage.

The only way to have a fair race is like PoE. Everyone logged in. The same layout. Even then, the person with the best computer/connection has an advantage but this is not on the provider of the game.

Outside of that, your outage, for me at least, was about 1 hour. A little disappointing but oh well.

While that sounds like a decent idea (I liked it when I first read it), this will simply shift from being the fastest to playing the most broken combo. Like, last season it would have clearly been shadow rend or ballista.

Not only that, but you’d actually have more benefit from starting later, because you’d find out what the broken combo is. Whereas currently racers have to figure out what is the strongest build just from patch notes and everyone starts on an equal footing.

I think the only way to make it fair regarding available time and network issues is simply to count the character play time. That will allow you to participate later and you have a static statistic you can rely on without having it be affected by other factors.

EDIT: on the other hand, any race that considers a character starting a few days later can’t be inherently fair, because by then you already have more information on optimal play.

For example, this season started with the knowledge that there are caches with dungeon keys. No one knew where they were, so they’d have to decide to stick to the regular speedrun or to explore for the keys and maybe get a skip.

Someone starting a new character on day 2 or 3 would already know that and have an advantage. Meaning that day 1 characters running would almost certainly not be able to win.

Whatever you have done is not enough LE-61, i cannot teleport to ANY location, so i cannot play. Great Job.

I think it would be fairer if its only the first character created for season & timed on how long it takes them to get to the top. That way its not based on who logs in first. But individual times.

And then players who start later get to see the mechanics first before going into the fight so they have an advantage.

at least you put effort into trying harder each time and this is appreciated, lets be honest the spike on this season from “traffic” demand was kinda crazy i noticed, as a casual player this “race” hardcore players are doing does not affect me anyway but i would love to see this issue fixed where im waiting for portal to load then wait some more after portal is loaded to get me to the next area, this breaks immersion
