The Vortex node in Maelstrom will only work on Thorn totem. I don’t have a Shaman character available to try Storm Totem, but i tried it on
Healing Totem from Eterra’s Blessing ancestral renewal
Healing Totem from Spriggan
Healing Totem from Druid passive Totemic Restoration proc
Upheaval Totem
Warcry Totem
Maelstrom will attach to the these totems, but it will do no bonus damage.
It will do bonus damage properly only on Thorn Totem - both direct cast and idol proc worked.
Steps to reproduce are rather simple. Just create a non-thorn totem and cast maelstrom on it.
