This isn’t a problem of lacking the resources to implement a better system. It’s a failure to consider another system in the first place. I am understanding that they face limitations. It’s not as if I expect them to do something like this immediately and have it ready to go by Monday’s patch. No, the point of this is to make sure this discussion is had so that they can figure out what to do about it in the future so this game can enjoy long-term success instead of being brushed aside as “more of the same” within the genre.
I feel very confident that they considered other systems. I’m sure they are always weighing different options and opinions. A few of the dev blogs that I have read explain how they got started and the passion they have for arpgs. They really break down why they want to go the path that they do. It has gained nothing but respect from me that they want to build a game around the great things they experienced themselves.
As for D3 I don’t see anything special or groundbreaking about it. Your choice is to go adventure mode because it is more fun for you and leads you to endgame that way. To me the story is where I have fun in D3, because once I get to “endgame” I’m done with it. The greater rift meta is where I feel the boring repetitive grind sets in and I’m over it. I’ll make another character and level through the story again and have fun. Hit the end and I’m done. So yeah, there are a lot of us out here as well that enjoy the story runs over the mindless endgame.
I’m perfectly happy to respect your preference there, and I’m not saying EHG should remove the campaign at this point. However, do understand that for a TON of people out there, the story is only good once or twice. After that, it’s a chore in the way of the gameplay–not gameplay in and of itself. This is why the alternative leveling/progression methods are proposed.
Further, I guarantee that if this game launches in a state close to how it is and doesn’t add something else substantial to do, people will burn out very quickly, leaving this as a “slightly better attempt than Wolcen, but still nothing compelling.”
The demand for this is very real and it would be foolish if this game fails to meet it.
I completely understand. That is why i see it as more of a resource problem. It has taken them up to now to code around the story that they have already. For them to create another alternate path of leveling, who knows the complexity of coding it takes for that to mesh. All the different paths you can take without a linear progression is a nightmare to write. But hey, if they can do it, all the more respect to them.
The 8.2 patch on monday alone shows that they have a ton of good stuff still coming.
Hell yeah it is! It has me very excited and I feel just as passionate as you do that they bring their A game and deliver something amazing. I’ve just seen a lot of other small indie companies lose their way because they got overwhelmed with different directions and didn’t stick to the vision. None of us want to see this go bad.
While I agree this is welcome and do look forward to it, I don’t think they can pin the longevity of this game on this particular system. It’s really hard not to compare to Wolcen in some ways, other than the fact that I think this game still potentially has a future.
I’m cool with them doing what they need to in order to release 1.0.0 in a complete, coherent state, but what interests me more is what they plan to / will do after. That’s where I think the value of these topics happening right now actually rests.
