Last Epoch won't start after Windows 11 upgrade

Hi,

I just upgraded to Windows 11 on my gaming laptop and when I start Last Epoch on Stream, it just shows the Last Epoch screen with the spinning mouse icon and just hangs there.

I’ve rebooted my laptop numerous times and the issue is still there. All other games I have run after the upgrade.

Thanks.

Bill

Welcome to the forums…

Cannot really help without a lot more info. There are lots of different things that could have happened with your upgrade that could explain problems/affect LE.

Things needed are: the player.log and/or error.logs (games debug info), le_graphicsmanager.ini (settings and resolution used) and the output of dxdiag report (details on your hardware, OS, drivers and diagnostics) on your system.

LE files are in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Eleventh Hour Games

In the meanwhile, the most obvious things to check are:

  1. Verify the Game Files through Steam - this is the first step whenever anything goes wrong with LE and I would definitely do this after an OS upgrade.

  2. As you are using a laptop its VERY important to make sure that with your Windows 11 upgrade all the device drivers, BIOS & critical laptop manufacturer apps are updated and actually support windows 11. Laptops have their own secret sauce that can potentially mess up if not installed/up-to-date. You may have to check on your laptop manufacturers website to check if there are specific updates they require for Win11.

  3. Also regarding Laptops - you must make 100% sure that the LE game is running exclusively on your discreet GPU - not the iGPU built into your processor (if applicable)… This is very important as any dynamic graphics mode on laptops is likely to cause instability with LE… You also need to make sure that your laptop is in performance mode/and probably plugged in whiel trying LE.

  4. Make sure that Windows 11 is updated and there are no failed/outstanding updates - especially ones specifically for your laptop on Windows 11.

  5. Make sure that your GPU Drivers are up to date - after upgrading to Win 11, I would definitely make sure to do a clean safe mode GPU driver installation - if you dont know how to do that, then I recommend using something like DDU.

  6. Make sure that you dont run any other apps while testing LE… Any apps but especially apps that are not specifically Win11 versions or that were not reinstalled after the upgrade… This includes things like graphical overlays etc… Just dont run them while trying LE.

Thats about all anyone could offer without more information…

Side Note: Personally I never upgrade Windows - I always backup my files & do a clean install as this is the only way to ensure that everything gets installed correctly & no residual issues occur from the upgrade process. In my decades of using Windows, upgrades are never 100% successful, there is always something that needs reinstalling or fixing afterwards…

Hi,

All my other games work fine on Stream after Windows 11 upgrade. I’m not sure how to attach the files that you need. The Last Epoch splash screen starts up and then nothing happens. I’m reading that some people had luck by removing the config files, but not sure which ones they are referring to. Worse case scenario is that I remove the Lat Epoch directories and see if I can have the game reinstall on my PC from Stream. I would lose all the hours I invested in my character. Any other advice would be appreciated before I go this route.

Thanks.

Bill

You can keep a copy of these files, it is rather unlikely they are the cause of your issues.

Here is where to find them, they are in the subfolder “saves”. Each file represents one character.

To attach a file, when you are writing a response, there is a group of icons at the top of the writing windows. One is an arrow towards up, by clicking it you will get a mini browser to find your file.

Cannot really offer anything more beyond my initial reply without additional information/files…

It doesnt matter that “All my other games work fine”… LE is a beta / early access game and cannot be compared to anything else wrt it working after an upgrade to Win11. There are hundreds of apps (even released ones) that potentially stop working or have issues on Win11 that require updating, workarounds etc.

Your comment about removing config files/last epoch directories etc are just as likely to have no impact as they could solve the problem - the issue here is that there is no information to work from so I cannot advise anything… thats like a doctor amputating a leg because someones calf is sore… there is not enough info to work from.

Reinstalling - on Steam, the Game File Verification that I advised above does the same thing but I do not know if anything went wonky with the Win11 upgrade in terms of the LE registry entries / supporting dlls other files that the game engine needs etc… So perhaps a proper reinstall might help but again, this is just guessing.

You do not need to remove your savegames - it would serve zero benefit. Why remove the savegames if you have nothing that would indicate that they could possibly be the cause of the problems… You definitely dont need to just “delete” them to test the possibility.

Do not ignore my other advice above - a lot of these generic suggestions work for various problems.

To reiterate… there is only so much help ANYONE can give you if you dont attach the game logs etc…

Hi,

Here are the le_graphicsmanager.ini (487 Bytes)
Player.log (6.0 KB)

Thanks.

Bill

And your dxdiag output to see hardware information, drivers and diagnostic info?

At first glance, just from the first few lines of the player.log it looks like you are using a GPU driver 27.21.14.5167 - from what I can tell this is from July 2020 - which is WAY too old - especially if you are using Win11. When searching this driver on Google, there are also potential issues with it specifically - i.e. that have nothing to do with LE.

Have you attempted any of the suggestions I mentioned in my first reply to you?

I was able to fix the issue. I updated the GPU driver but that didn’t solve the problem. I did some digging on Steam and found the link to verify the game and it found 2 files that got corrupted. Steam reinstalled them and the game is now working again. So it seems the Windows 11 upgrade corrupted the game when I tried to run it the first time after the install.

Thanks for your help.

Note: Game files can get corrupted for various reasons, not just an OS upgrade. You should verify game files if the game exhibits any odd behaviour - especially if it was “working before”…
