Lagon... WTH?

I just started a few days ago. I was loving my experience in the game, thoroughly enjoying myself playing through the campaign.

Then I hit Lagon. Hard? This guy is way too hard for me. Is there any way I can make this fight a lot easier?

I’m actually considering bailing on the game entirely because of this one fight.

Please, no advice on “git gud”. I’m a senior, my dodging skills are as good as they’ll ever be, which is to say poor.

My normal approach with these games is just to out gear them to compensate for my lack of dodging abilities. If I can’t do that, then this boss is a wall I’ll never get past.

I’ve read that I can just go start doing monoliths and then come back later. I’d be ok with this, if Lagon wasn’t gating my access to factions.

Any suggestions for this suddenly deflated new player?

There’s plenty of videos and discussions about this already. Basically, all his 1-shot mechanics are clearly telegraphed, and easily avoidable… once you know what to look for.

cap your cold, lighting, and just listen to him talk. he will tell you when he is about to rain death on you. you save your movement ability for then and get out of the way.

Don’t stand in shit. That’s all this fight is.

I was in the same boat, a bit older than I reall ywant to be plus mouse hand doesnt work ro well, a sI severed most of the nerves a while ago and it never got back to normal.
As far as Lagon goes, I had the same journey and spent too long trying to get past. Moonbeams mostly did for me, then on second stage just touching a wave wiped me out
Best bet is go away form hinm, go to the monolith in end of time and just work thorugh that. By the time I was level 65 I had a lot more health and damage, plus the skill upgrades, and while it still was easy, it was just a case of standing on the stairs to avoid the big beam,
and dodging moonbeams - everything else was fairly straightforward.
He’s a huge step up after everything before, and it does feel like you’ll never make it, but just plug away, get some levels and better gear, and it will come.

Watch his eye. He will always look at where the big beam of one-shotting is going to start from before it starts. Basically be anywhere else than where he is looking.

Well there’s no point in hiding the fact that, imo at least, there are a few bossing coming after Lagon (in monos mostly) who are harder and require a lot more dodging prowess. The devs really like the mechanic of telegraphing big attacks and making the player move or dodge their way out of the “bad stuff”. For me the worst boss is the Emperor of Corpses (big zombie dragon). I die to him much more than any other boss in the game.

Beware then that Lagon is the boss of the Ending the Storm monolith, so you might want to avoid that one for a bit. Also, it used to be the case (they may have changed it) that you had to beat that mono (and hence Lagon) to progress that path through the monoliths. I know there was talk of changes in the paths the player has to take thru the monos to reach empowered, but I don’t know if it resulted in any changes.

It’s my hope I can simply out-gear or out-level those fights to the point where I can do them. My dodging skills are a D-minus at best, and will not get better with time.

So I know you said not to comment on the dodging aspect, but I just want to make sure you’re aware that the dodging for this fight mostly relies on paying attention to his wind-up animations. So we aren’t really talking about twitch reaction times (I’m not very good at those either), the real skill is not to tunnel vision and make sure you’re keeping an eye on his model.

Once you get used to what animation corresponds to which ability, you can usually dodge them by simply being in motion. So if I see him raise his claw way back I just start walking in a straight line to the other side of the platform and he’ll pretty much always miss me.

For the sustained eye laser that goes from one side to the other, you can just dip down to the stairs on either side and it’ll miss you completely.

Lastly, in the downstairs phase just pick clockwise or counter-clockwise and continue running in the same direction. Don’t backtrack if you see a tentacle pop up, just get to it on your next rotation. This will make it significantly easier to dodge waves.

On the gearing side, I’d recommend building up your physical resist (elementals should already be maxed) and then getting some endurance and health regen. That will allow you to regularly dip down to the stairs if you’re ever uncertain about what move is coming next. You’ll probably eat a lot of tentacle hits this way, but with your regen and damage reduction you can absorb those pretty well.

Edit: Also, tons of people struggle with Lagon on their first character. People who aren’t ARPG vets will find him to be a decently hard wall. I wouldn’t chalk it up to your age or throw in the towel too quickly, the fact is he’s a step up from the rest of the campaign up to that point and it may take a bit of time to beat him.

You need to craft gear with HP on it… Also every traversal skill (movement skill) in the game can be customized to provide invulnerability, dodge chance, healing, etc. etc. that turn that movement skill into a very defensive ability.

Most mechanical boss fights don’t need great dodging skills or reflexes.
You just need to learn to read the animations and how to deal with them.

Lagon can be done without getting hit once if done properly.
What are you dying to exactly? His most lethal ability is his eye beam, which you as the player are in full control of, where this ability goes.

Here is an old video from me explaining the fight.
Note: The video is pretty old and the fight did change slightly with the 2 tentacles that need to be attacked instead of lagon dreictly. But that doesn’t change how to deal with the mechanics.

As an extra tip in phase 2, the waves spawn coutnerclockwise. If go counter-clockwise around the room while the waves are spawning you never need to dodge them.

Are you asking Arrowhead to balance the game to you?

i was hitting the same brick wall on this boss, i started to run over and over the way to Lagos reset rinse and repeat until you got your frost and lightning resist way up ( the way up to Lagos those mobs drop plenty resistance gear) after i did that i one shotted him. at that time a lvl 63 beast master druid.

To those saying it’s not hard, it’s very difficult for me. I haven’t lasted longer than about 5 seconds. I haven’t made it to the second wave. I was destroying everything up to this point.

I went and did a level 58 echo at level 53. It was a cakewalk. Why is this boss such a huge difficulty spike?

I watched a video on YT about acquiring a temporal key that would let me skip past Lagon to get to chapter 9. I’ll come back to him when I’m much stronger.

It’s your defenses and low life.

Your resistances are averaging around 50%. You have 875 life. No Dodge, Armor Mitigation, Block Chance, Reduced Bonus Damage from Crit, Crit Avoidance. You have a lot of ailment damage, but no chance to even apply them.

What worked for me was just keep running back and forth between the tentacles. As long as you’re moving he won’t hit you directly.

Not familiar with minions. But you have almost every ailment damage type covered. But if they are all 0% chance, then they are never being applied. Not sure how Doom works, but maybe if it applied, would kill it?

875 life isn’t that bad for campaign Lagon but you definitely want to at least cap cold and lightning resistance.

If he gets hit hard with 65% cold and 48% light, then moar life would also be moar better.

I’m not wrong…

There are several times in the campaign and early monoliths where the game will make it seem like your build and gear are fine then you will hit a brick wall at a boss. IMO, the bosses in the campaign and the early monoliths are overtuned. A lot of people will disagree w/ me but its the truth. Otherwise those brick walls wouldn’t exist. The difficulty is very uneven.

I had capped resistances, 1K health, and 300 barrier and he still 1 shot me. I had to get someone to help me beat it because the game refused to drop or allow me to craft better items. It doesn’t help that the game locks you out of the merchant’s guild until chapter 9. The campaign could definitely use some adjustments in terms of difficulty.

I played a lot of EA and Lagon was always the first boss where I actually had to look at my resists and make sure my gear was upgraded in the forge. It’s a precursor for endgame, there are some abilities that are just going to kill you no matter what your resists and hp are.

If anyone is having this much of a problem with Lagon they’re going to have a much worse time with Majasa

You can stand behind the edge of the walls on either side to avoid his sweeping beam if you get caught. Once I learned that the fight became a lot easier. You got this don’t give up old man!

Boss has been nerfed so many times it’s a face roll now.
