I am stuck at 3rd MoF at Lagon boss. area level 80. His lightning / cold beam insta kills me. it is difficult to manouver there and I feel sometimes as if this beam actually pulls me towards it or freezes for a while. I already had 6 or 7 attempts and it goes well until he kimd of “scratches” me with the beam and then Im unable to move for a short while, split sec, and I die.
I am clvl 73 sword / board ignite warpath paladin with all res at approx 80% (aside from physical which is 15%) and base block 70%, hp 1k now.
his beam has been the subject of much debate and frustration for a lot of players. it’s an extremely powerful DoT (which is why your armor and block are not helping you). your best bet is having capped cold and lightning res and avoiding the beam at all costs!
his eye glows red as a sign that he’s about to do it… once that happens, he will zone in on where you were standing at that moment, so when you see the eye change, move to the opposite side of his platform. sentinel unfortunately doesn’t have a good movement skill for this fight since lunge requires a target and lagon’s body is untargetable by it (for now). try to get as much movement speed as you can on your boots while maintaining your res cap for cold and lightning.
it sucks it has taken you so many tries. he can be a real bastard, and the 2nd phase is challenging in its own way, but at least your lunge works on the coliseum floor. be very aware that he currently seems to be bugged and may be in the middle of his eye beam when you’re teleported back to his platform for the final stage.
edit: afterthought, since i don’t play sentinel much, but the shield charge skill might work without a target… if you don’t have it spec’d, it might be worth swapping something on your skillbar for it during this encounter. hopefully lunge gets some love and can target lagon to be useful in this fight, or (my hope) they remove the need for a target altogether. sentinel suffers the most from this because afaik all the other classes have movement skills that don’t require a target.)
I will just give it a few more tries and I will quit.
And switch to my LB sorc maybe and see how it goes with him. as for the moment I shelved him hyped by the warpath (waithing for s22 in d3, as I am ww barb guy )
But to tell the truth, devs should really nerf the dmg of the damn beam.
you’re not the only one who feels that way! DoTs in general feel pretty overtuned in the game. with the old protections system, i often neglected them and suffered for it, so i wasn’t sure if DoTs were as strong as they seemed. now i can see that i still get hit very hard by them with capped res if i don’t have other forms of damage mitigation (reduced damage taken mods, etc). i won’t be surprised if they get a bit of a balance pass in the near future.
Dont give up… Lagon sucks really badly for melee focussed builds but its not impossible… The key are the tells that VapingNeckBeard mentioned and hoofing it to the opposite side of the platform… If possible, you should just swap out your fastest boots for the fight. Shield rush will move you but its clunky and a fast movement speed is usually enough. Its basically an exercise in kiting that is not pleasureable…
lvl 73 should be possible… it will just take longer to kill him… Also you dont mention your armour which affects all hits so if thats too low you could suffer if you get “scratched”
btw - your LB Sorc will have no problems… in fact, most range chars have much less of a problem with Lagon due to all his foibles.
EDIT: and be very careful with the Monolith boosts… Things like enrage, gb, dodge and increased health are bad against lagon…
Nah, I’ve done him quite a few times on melee builds, it’s easy if you can avoid the beam (and I used to have significant issues avoiding the beam).
I’d suggest watching one of the videos on YouTube that explain how his mechanics work then practice on the campaign version. It’s a lot more forgiving of mistakes and easier to repeat for practice. Once you can do the campaign version without getting hit by the beam you can try the monolith version.
You could also record yourself doing it to review or upload it to YouTube and ask others for a review of what you’re doing wrong.
So this boss fight really does not “change” much, whether you are playing melee or ranged.
Your goal is to avoid the “sweeping” beam entirely. All other mechanics are, with a tanky build acceptable to get hit, i assume from your build describtion, that you only have troubled with the “sweeping beam” is that correct?
He is doing 2 different beams, for both his eyes will start to glow red, and he wil lstart a short wind-up animation. You can quickly identify if it’s the sweeping beam or the single focused beam. You just need to memorize his movement pattern when his eye start to glow red.
For the sweeping beam it is important to note, as soon as his eye start to glow red Lagon has “locked” the position where you stood when his eye turns red. He then will do a sweeping motion with the point where he “locked you in” as the center point
The savest way to avoid the sweeping beam entirely is:
Stand very far on one side of the platform(either right or left).
When his eye starts to glow red, move to the complete other side of the platfform, even if you are not sure yet which beam he is preparing.
Just always repeat that process and do not try to move to close to the middle when dodging other mechanics.
The worst thing that can happen is, you start moving to early and locks you in close to the side you wanted to “escape” the beam. That can sometimes lead to a case where the sweeping motion goes to the very edge of the platform at the side you tried to escape too.
If you still having troubles, either make a video of yours and we will give you some hints. (If you are afraid of people saying you are “noob”, let them talk, or send me the video as pm, i promise we will help you C= )
If a video of yours is no option, just tell me and i will make a video on my own going through the process step by step.
As you already see, here are alot of people willing to help you and not judging anyone by their capabilities to deal with mechanical boss fights.
With all the information that you recieved by text you can probably try that fight a few more times, but as i already said, if you still having troubles a video would be super helpful if you have the possibilty to record that(doesn’t has to be super good quality)
If you can’t or don’t want to post such thing publicly (which i would understand) just hit me an dm, we will solve this together!
Thank you so much for support! Well, I have never recorded such videos before, is there any software you recommend? I dont mind posting at all.
Do you know of any good tutorial video on this fight you could link?
Honestly this fight no matter what build you do is pretty easy with practice. I have done it using almost every skill. You just have to dodge the mechanics. If you have enough gear you can tank his slams/melees; have to always avoid the beam to be safe. If you are struggling during this fight my biggest advice is to watch your positioning and read the bosses movements. Make sure to have movement skill ready just in case you make a mistake.
There are plenty of softwares that allow you to record. I think one of the easiest and most popular is OBS Studio, which requires minimal setup before recording.
If you have a Nvidia GraCa you can use Nvidia Experience to record.
Tbh i don’t know if there are currently helpful videos out there. You might want to search a bit on YT. Mechanically Lagon from Story or the Lvl 80 Timelines is the same.
If you can’t find any and still struggleing i could try to make a short video just for that specific fight.
otoh…my LB sorc with ligtning res 41% and cold res 53% killed him easily and this was a cake walk damn it - just did it…no armour, dodge 36% , poison necrotic void res all 0% and I am further now then with my tank Paladin!!! with everything maxxed.
