Issue with the shaman mastery passive - Not the Passive Tree

I’m extremely new to this game, but I’ve played a ton of other arpgs. I heard shaman was awful so I thought i would try to make a playable build with it for hardcore as I generally only play that mode and i noticed this passive line:

“50% elemental resists while you control a totem”

I think this is an actual problem for the mastery. This line seems extremely build restrictive for shamans as any build not including totem spam or even not using totems at all needs another 200% resists on their gear/passives to have consistent defenses against elemental damage. I personally think it should be changed to something completely different that’s more generally consistent or at least have the line changed to “50% elemental resists while you control a minion” as this at least lets you build around companions as well as totems. Such as wolves with lightning nodes, bear+lightning swipe, storm crows in general, branches of winter sprigan or coldblooded/thunder stringer scorpion.

Well tbh seeing as how if you are shaman your keystone and build around me passives are melee and spell damage that stacks for every totem you have… I dont think changing the passive makes sense.

Shaman is intertwined with totems, just like a beast master who uses no companions is missing out huge benefits of his tree/passive.

They simply need to do more work on making including totems into your build easier and more fun for non pure totem builds.

While they do have a lot of totem related nodes and storm totem is the mastery skill, they also have a lot of general “minion” nodes. Which is why i suggested changing it from “active totem” to “active minion”. As with this change it changes nothing for totems but opens up using companions instead as all totems and companions share the minion tag.

Yes, which means its just lightning beast master.

I think its important that classes have identity. Shamans is totem.
