It turns out running Devotion amulet was the answer. Even as a fire build instead of lightning.

Warpath keeps my mana near 0 which makes the smite procs melt bosses. Then when I need mana, the crazy fast smite cast speed brings me back to full while keeping myself healed the entire time.

Warpath also increase the damage of smite by double due to the fire pen too.
