Is there a reason my skills don't trigger when I press the button that should trigger them?

There are times when I’m definitely not shocked or stunned (because I’m clearly moving my character around the screen), but when I try to either shift or cast a skill (especially Lethal Mirage) I can click the button multiple times before it triggers. I’ve also made sure to confirm that the skill timer has completely reset - there’ve been many times this has happened when I haven’t attempted to use the skill for many seconds after it’s cooldown has expired.

I initially noticed it when Shift wouldn’t trigger immediately. At first I thought maybe it was because it triggered when I released the key rather than when I pressed it, but I’ve confirmed that’s not the case because there are times that I’ll just hold down the button and see that it takes a good second or two before it’ll cast. But it only seems to do this when I’m in a monolith. It triggers immediately when I’m in between echoes.

I have Lethal Mirage mapped to my right-click mouse button and I can quickly tap it 3-5 times and see the skill icon flashing on my screen without it triggering.

This has gotten me killed many, many times now, and I’m really getting annoyed.

Could it be lag? Make sure you’re using the correct server. I’ve had it happen before that LE switched my server to US instead of EU and I begin having lots of latency.

I dont think its lag could be part of it. Iv had this same exact issue. Im also located in the US using US east servers. Generally get about 28 ping

Iv also had shift become completely broken. As in i couldnt even trigger the spell at all. The spell wpuld be blacked/grayed out on the skill bar. Only fix was to switch zones. This does happen in the campaign as well

Shield rush has also done this. This skill however is worse than shift when it happens. Woth shield rush it seems to be a zone issue same zones seem to break SR to were u can use it at all

Lunge as well i think. Need to go back and test this to confirm havent made a build with it in a long while

Puncture using a bow at times the skill wont show the visuals. When this happens it wither does no dmg or does dmg.

Very noticeable in the final boss fight before reach the end of time chapter 2

The only time I’ve had something similar happen to me was when I was doing an arena echo and all my skills except traversal were suddenly disabled. And they were re-enabled once I left. But my issue was that I couldn’t use them at all until I left that zone, and the traversal skill was the only one enabled, so I don’t think it’s the same issue.

But the OP says that, in his case, skills are just slow to respond. He clicks them a few times and only after a while do they respond. That lead me to think it might be lag instead. Especially because he says that it only happens in echoes and not in-between them, which would make sense since that area should have almost no lag at all.

I can see how OP issue would be lag. Iv experienced the same as OP.

Its weird cuz i get 1g up and down for my internet.

Now my wife does play the game as well art the same time. So this could be our issue.

Not sure what i can do on my end to make LE lag less

Well, only the devs can tell what really goes under the hood, but in principle, your internet speed shouldn’t be relevant as long as you have the minimum required. Meaning that having 1GB or 10GB shouldn’t improve the issues, since they’re mostly caused by server performance.
The devs are aware that server performance isn’t ideal at the moment and it’s one of the things they’re addressing with 1.0.

For the most part, I haven’t had many issues with latency. Maybe because I play in the EU server and there are less people there than in the US or other servers. There were occasions where the game was lagging hard, but they were all temporary.

I’d also assume that unless you’re on criminally-slow-broadband then ping is likely more important than speed/throughput.

I don’t think it’s latency unless it’s some transient issue. I haven’t died to it yet tonight, so I haven’t checked immediately after it’s happened, but I did check at one point tonight after it happened and I’d finished killing the mob I was dealing with, and I had a 38ms ping, which should be fine. Also the first time it happened tonight it was with the first mob I encountered in an echo, so it can’t be related to cooldown. I thought someone made a good point about someone else using the internet (because I do watch videos on a second monitor), but that’s data being download, it shouldn’t affect my upload speed that much. I do have broadband. Maybe it is a server-side issue, but I didn’t want to assume that right away.

I did also think about how maybe one of my skills had an animation that couldn’t be interrupted, but I pretty much only use Shuriken (with Blade Shield), Shift, and Lethal Mirage, and if I’m not actively casting Shuriken then I should be fine to cast some other spell or move. And the fact that I am in fact moving as I’m attempting to cast Lethal Mirage means I’m not casting Shuriken. Unless I’m not allowed to cast Lethal Mirage if I’m moving? I’m pretty much positive that I’ve run into this while standing still, too, so I don’t think it’s that either.

Just for the record, I just died after clicking Lethal Mirage 3-4 times, saw the icon flashing, checked and have 38ms ping.

Just for curiosity’s sake, have you tried on the offline client? Maybe try reinstalling?

So … I don’t have a comparable offline character because my online character has gear that disables healing from flasks, and my offline character has Ballista as a secondary skill. This means that when things are tight I can run around kiting things while the Ballistas chew them down, and if I do get stuck in a mob then any flasks that drop do heal me. So I don’t need to use Lightning Mirage as often, and tight spaces don’t always feel quite as tight.

That said, once I got my offline character up to lvl 90 echoes it did seem like placing Ballistas and triggering Lethal Mirage did sometimes fail, but if what I’m seeing online is 100 on a 0-100 scale then offline it’s maybe like 5%-10%. So maybe there’s a problem being exacerbated by needing to communicate with the server. Then again, with such a low occurrence offline maybe it’s not happening and it’s all in my head. I’d probably need a few more weeks of playing offline to confirm what I’m thinking is happening offline really is absolutely happening.

But to be honest, I’m really burned out playing the game right now. I’ve spent a ton of hours on it over the holidays (both online and off) and I just need to take a break for a while. I am looking forward to when the game can add new content, because right now the echoes just feel really grindy and the stuff that use the keys feel like they take way too long for me to complete, and they also feel a bit grindy. I’m hoping the stuff they’re adding in the next patch will make things a bit more interesting.
