Is Balthas the Emperor?

I didn’t understand all the lore stuff in game and I’m close to the end I believe (doing monolith campaign) but I feel like Balthas is actually the Emperor we’re fighting :

  • He disapears at the start of the campaign during the war against Rayhel using the power of Epoch shards saying it’s time for things to change, then we don’t hear about him at all. All we know is that he dropped a shard.
  • After that there is the Emperor era that killed the god (if i’m right)
  • At the very end, we kill the corps of the Emperor that loots an Epoch shard

Do we know the true identity of the Emperor ? Can it be Balthas then ?

  1. We know he started the Last Refuge and was its first Elder. He left, but nowhere does it state that he used his single shard to go back into time. Remember that it took him 2 shards before, and we got slingshotted along.
  2. It’s never sated the Emperor killed Rahyeh, I believe. He’s in his old crib, so probably has a story-connection to his death, but doesn’t mean he did the deed.
  3. If we presume that the shard Balthas left behind was the one we take back from Pannion, then the one from the Husk is actually the one Grael fetched for Leena at the start of the Campaign. I assume that this is how the Emperor got his necromancy abilities, but that still means it could be anyone with knowledge about the Epoch from the Divine Era. (Except Leena, it’s confirmed the Emperor was a ‘he’ in his non-Lich life)

To add:

  1. He recognizes us when we start the fight, yet Yulia doesn’t ever tell us who he is. Personally, I think that means she doesn’t know we have a previous (timeline-wise) connection to him.
  2. It could all be red herrings. We’ll just have to wait for the chapters to release.

Balthas is among the top 3 guesses though, along with Grael & Morditas.

thank you for the clarifications ! I’ll try to be more focus on theses hints while pexing my alt

My money is on Morditas

I straight up asked Mike on dev stream once, he said it isn’t him.

Still hoping he lied, though

Wait, isn’t it exactly the opposite? His lines in the throne room fight indicate he has no idea who we are. That’s why I’m so opposed to the theories about him being Grael or the player character.

You’re right, I misremembered.

Still, Yulia knows we know Grael, but never mentions it, so it feels weird.

Edit: And it can’t be the player, because the player isn’t guaranteed male.

Jokes on you, the true Emperor was Minimus.

He’s there during the ruined era, then he’s there at the End of Time.

The mastermind behind it all, always watching.

Maybe it’s his big brother Maximus?

If that guy hadn’t called him a stupid mutt we’d have flying cars and bacon flavored ice cream right now!
