How to participate in the Multiplayer Open Beta

This is regarding the multiplayer open beta starting on the 23rd.
I already have the game, do I also need to press the playtest participation button on the store page in order to play with friends who do not have the game?

Yes you do, because the playtest is on a different branch with a different patch.
