Hi everyone.
I was wondering if anyone knew how the Sort feature for your stash/inventory actually worked. How does it pick what order the items go?
I’ve ruled out a few ways
- It is not sorted by value
- It is not sorted by item level
- It is not sorted by name alphabetically
- It is not sorted by item type
- It is not sorted by item type alphabetically
- It is not sorted by class requirement
- It is not sorted by rarity
I simply cannot figure out by what criteria it sorts the items. Is it just random?
It would be great to see some more sorting options, or maybe eventually a reworked sorting system as it’s not always getting sorted in the most space efficient way.

this fact bothers me the most. I don’t care in which way they sort, but please sort it the most efficient way. Thats the main goal of such a function.

The system can definitely be made smarter, but it would be nice with more sorting options as well for those who want to sort their stash tabs by class requirement, level requirement, alphabetically, or even by item subtype, so the same helmets would be palced together like this
Stash Tab Sorting Example
I have not figured it out completely but part of it is based on the time the item was added to the container. Items that were added first will get sorted to the top left. I think there is also some algorithm that tries to make it space efficient, then it sorts based on when the item was added. To see this you can add 3 different keys to a stash tab and note the order you added them, when you hit the sort button they should reverse based on the order you added the keys to the tab.
You are indeed right. I just tested it… I still find it one of the dumbest ways of sorting items. At least sort it by
Item Type → Name → Space Efficiency
It is so frustrating that my tabs look like this just because it’s based on when I added which ones:

My guess is that the algorithm groups item by height, and then it will try to fill the space starting from the top left corner, going one item at a time, doing all items with a height of 4 first, then 3, and so on.
Others have said that it is based on time, but if you press the sort key multiple times, you will get different sortings, so I would guess that the time part only counts when sorting for the first time (or the timing is reset after sorting).
Sorting a stash tab with staves and other 2h weapons will mix them together, so I don’t think that width is taken into account (but I don’t remember how it deals with belts so I might be wrong).
Clicking the sort button only switched between “Last added” or “First added” sortings. It is still based on time it would seem, just changes the direction.
In the end, it doesn’t matter how it works, because either way it’s a stupid way it works lmao

Please for the love of Pete add some sorting options to the game. I would love if we could sort by LP or heck even something as simple as grouping all items with the same name (such as in a unique tab) together.
The current systems is inadequate almost to the point of being useless.
