I just started playing the game. I am playing my Class but how do I sub-specialize? I can see the sub-specialties in the screen but I can’t select or put any points into them. My character is around level 18.

Assuming you mean the Masteries. You need to get to that stage in the quests to unlock the masteries.
What is that stage? Is it at a certain character level? A specific zone?
If you open you passive teree an click on a mastery you even see a tooltip that explains everything ;). I’m pretty sure the game guide has a topic about it as well.
On topic: You get to choose your mastery once you reached a specific zone. You CAN’T miss it so rest assured and keep on hacking and slashing.
As Macknum says, it’s part of the main quest.
