Horrid lag / hitching / rubber banding

Since the last patch or two, performance after loading a character has become awful. Any use of a skill, or an enemy using an attack, even just moving, causes the game to freeze for at least a second and sometimes much longer. But events are still happening. so when it finally unfreezes, I’m often dead. The same thing happens in the same session when simply entering another zone.

Also, my PC takes a hit. I used to be able to Alt-TAB and do stuff, albeit with a very brief period of lag. Now, I can sit there for as long as 30 seconds before mouse clicks (i.e. on a browser tab) are recognized. It can also take several minutes, sometimes as long as 4 or 5, for the game to Exit to desktop. The longer the play session, the worse everything I mentioned gets. It seems you still have memory leak issues. Anyone planning to say “It’s your system!”, it’s never remotely been this bad.

16gb memory, SSD

Edit: I just fired up LE and in addition to the usual horrible lagging, it crashed. I was playing for several minutes, cast Thorn Totem and then Storm Totem. The game crashed mid-ST cast. Got a brief white popup window saying something like LE Unity and a status bar. That disappeared and then the CTD. I should also mention that all this occurs regardless of the graphics quality settings.

Just now: Started the game via Steam (took 4 minutes), clicked Offline and it took another 4 minutes until I could select someone from the Character Selection list. Clicked Play Game and it took almost 8 minutes until the game began (with the usual lag/hitching). CPU usage between 90-94%.

Exited to desktop (took nearly 5 minutes).

You should probably post your most recent log file from when you experienced these issues. Its likely that the logs may have the answer to what is causing this. Without the logs, everything is probably speculation.

However, the description you provide is not normal - especially maxing out your CPU , Steam delays and slow load times (especially Offline mode!) makes me suspect that your install could be messed up - perhaps a patch didnt apply properly (yes, this does happen) and has messed something up. I recommend that your verify the Steam Game Files to see if thats ok.

Another thing that could be happening could be (again because of the high processor %) is that something may be happening locally on your machine that has messed up. You may want to monitor what else is going on on your system when you launch Steam / LE… There could be some Windows Update that has failed and keeps retrying and hogging your system.

It may even be some other update that happened automatically or some underlying issue so you may want to check Event Viewer and see if Windows is complaining about something.

Obviously making sure your system is up to date re Patches and GPU drivers is important too.

You also dont mention your GPU or the game settings and resolution you are using - these can highlight a potential performance issue or even a particular setting that is borking out. Lots of possibilities

Remember to post your logs for the devs.

(apologies - if I’ve said CPU usage through the roof I meant RAM usage)

I figured it out … sort of. Buckle up, this is weird.

If I already have MS Edge up, I see the issues I described. If I load LE first, get into a character session, then alt-Tab to run Edge, everything is fine. Load times fast, exiting to Char Selection is quick, even quitting to desktop takes a few seconds. I still see lag when I first do stuff with a character, but it’s far less severe.

The issue is that with running Edge first, then LE, my RAM usage is in the 90’s. Running LE and then Edge, in the 40’s. Makes no sense to me.

I plan to experiment with Chrome (I far prefer Edge) so I doubt I’ll switch if it’s Edge causing this for some bizarre reason.

I do have all the latest drivers for everything. I did run a Verify and it passed. My GPU is a Nvidia Gforce RTX 2070.

Can you also tell me where the logs are? I found one (bmslog) but it hasn’t been updated in 3 years.

Of course, this morning, everything is fine even running Edge first. I did disable a couple things in the Startup: Bose Device Updater, MS OneDrive, and Uranium Backup. Can’t imagine any of those having a real impact.

I’ll see if the issues return as the day goes on.

CPU ~ RAM. Lol, thats a different problem entirely.

Edge first then LE seemingly the issue… thats odd. Unless Edge is hogging a lot of RAM and LE is struggling to get its share - e.g. your system is swapping to virtual - which would explain the slowness but with 16gb ram you shouldnt be having that kind of issue.

Definitely odd.

Chrome vs Edge - correct me if I am wrong but they both use the same Chromium back end so I’d be surprised if you notice anything. Do you have any odd plugins running on the browser? Maybe one of them is doing something odd.

Many versions ago, LE would have hassles with Alt-tabbing and crash occassionally, but that hasnt been an issue for years now.

Logs are found in

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Eleventh Hour Games\

player.log is the most current, player-prev.log is from the previous session. They cycle so its important to make a copy when you experience the issues else you may not see anything logged.

Disabling things at Startup is usually fine for improving your systems general snappiness but provided they arent trying to do something while you are playing and hogging too much ram, they shouldnt be affecting things in the way you describe… That said, there have been issues with third party apps causing issues with Unity (the game engine LE uses) so its always a possibility. Of the 3 you mentioned, unless they were actively doing something - like running a backup - I doubt they are an issue - I could be wrong…

Oh, and your 2070. RAM usage is directly proportional to in-game settings so you may want to see what happens if you drop yours dramatically and see what the game does - i.e. drop down to 1080p. very low and watch what happens. If things change dramatically, then it could be related. If nothing changes then its somehting else… If it gets better then you can incrementally increase settings again to see where the “cliff edge” is. Sometimes a little setting like AA can make a big change. And obviously, if you are running other things at the same time, you have to juggle things - on my old system if I wanted to watch Netflix and play LE at the same time obviously I had to compensate else game performance tanked…

Post your log (remember to zip it) if the problem happens again.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

As I mentioned, the issue seems to have gone away for some reason but I’ll be keeping an eye on it as the day progresses. It’s been a few hours since I started up LE and all is well.

I had been running on Medium graphics and I just bumped it up to High. Normally, I can run it on Ultra with minimal lag when starting a new session.

I checked the player log and there are references to the crash from (I assume) yesterday.

Player.log (486.6 KB)

Log doesnt offer an easy cause - at least not for a non-Unity developer like myself - but there are various errors that I have seen before so nothing screams “unusual”. Devs will have to check but I dont see the usual kind of thing that matches with your problem description.

Maybe whatever your system was doing is now complete. Who knows… Maybe checking the event viewer during the period you were having issues could help - it may say what what was going on or if an update or something happened.

Glad it seems to have resolved itself. If it happens again, then maybe there will be somehting to be able to compare it working now.

It’s been smooth as silk all day, with or without Edge running. Very strange and it always worries me when something “fixes” itself :frowning:

Thanks again.

Yeah. Hate that myself too. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
