Hit a wall at around level 72

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the new season, and powered a shield throw pally into the 70’s. Mostly crushing the campaign, with the odd tougher boss here and there.

I’ve tweaked my survivability and now have around 1400 health (no energy shield). Mostly max resists, and 64% block with 49% mitigation, and around 35% reduction from armour.

Still, I’m now at the point that many enemies can easily one shot me and wondered what to do. I’m currently level 72, running level 78 normal monoliths, because everything else is just way too easy.

Would grinding out a few levels help ? Gear is now getting slower and slower to find…

All your stats are very low. You need way more health (at least 4k), you need way more armor reduction (at least 70%+), you need endurance at 60% with a decent threashold, as well as all resistances at 75%+.
These are the basic values you should aim for.

Most of it will come from your gear, so you should go down in difficulty and farm it.
Some of it will come from your passive tree (Sentinel has lots of strong defensive nodes).
Some of it will come from your blessings.

Maybe you did some bad choices in your build? It would help if you could link your build here. Use https://www.lastepochtools.com/planner/ and import your build, then save and paste the link here.

I’ve mostly been solo self found (not officially), and don’t yet have a high enough merchants guild level to buy any better gear, but I can’t see any way of getting any where near 4k life at level 72.

Before I ‘readjusted’, I was running 1100 life.
My resists are mostly at or near 75%, but to get my armour up high enough to get 70% reduction is a huge increase that I can’t see myself getting easily.

My build is here:-

You have almost no source of health%. You need those to scale your health up. Belt and chest are a good source for it. Belt even has hybrid health affix, which gives you both.

For armor, you’ll need better bases, but you should also take the %increased armor blessing from The Age of Winter, but I guess you’re not there yet. Some %armor sources would also help with this. You can put that in Helmet, Body armor, Boots, Shield.

As for passives:
Relentless in the base tree does little for you. You should instead max Fearless and fill the rest with Juggernaut. This will also free resistances. (you’ll get more ways to free resistances via blessings).
In the Paladin tree you went for full damage. Switch them with 5 points in Valor and 10 in Defiance. These should get you closer to endurance cap and give you lots of endurance threshold, even if you deal a bit less damage.

Mostly it’s just fixing your gear affixes. You’re mostly missing lots of %health increases. Just flat health won’t give you as much. Your belt has an open suffix, so craft hybrid health in there.
Idols can also be a good source of extra health. Spam tombs until a few drop.

Someone with more knowledge of the ins and outs of your build can maybe give you some more hints (or even just say I’m an idiot and completely wrong about what I just said ).

You absolutely don’t need 4k health at this point. However, you also don’t have the stats you described.

  1. The shield you’re using works by giving you temporary buff that goes away each time you take a hit. So often your actual block chance is only around 20%.

  2. Shield Throw reduces your resistances by 20%, you could say it’s almost permanent negative.

So you need a new shield, one with permanent Block Chance, and you need a little more resistances to offset the negative. As DJ already said, you should look for %Health affixes, get to at least 2000 HP for now.

Next, how do you heal?
Smite heals, but I’m guessing you don’t always stand face to face with the target, and potions won’t be enough. You could look into HP Regen.

The armor is quite doable if you add some Strength affixes. STR gives % armor as well as % increased dmg to your Shield Throw (but not to your Smite).

  • Look for new Chest Armor bases, because they have double armor compared to what you have now. The best one can have +700.
  • Your belt can also have armor, up to +250.
  • Your gloves and boots can also have more flat armor, but the best ones (~200 per piece) require level 86.

I guess I’m spoiled by often having legendaries to level up.

I redid your passive tree and slotted in some more defensive item base types you can use. Rebuild here:

https://www.lastepochtools.com/planner/BZNyvlYB

You committed a bit to early to dumping more than 5 points per node. This is usually really inefficient. The 6-8 point space is best filled in last once you are build complete and have points left to spare. To much damage was taken on the tree instead of defenses so I balanced it out.

Last Epoch is all about eating your vegetables first before getting to desert. Once your defensive foundation is in place you can slowly start to build more and more offense. A notable include is the chest piece that drops from the Fall of Outcasts monolith timeline boss Abomination. It gives critical hit immunity, which is the number one killer of any new build in the monoliths. It is an easy slot in until you can build gear with crit reduction or avoidance.

The affixes also need adjustment ( I didn’t do that on my rebuild as you will have to slowly flip your entire armor base depending on what you find). General rule of thumb is always have 1 health and 1 resistance affix, never double stack resist. Once your resist cap out it should be 1 health and 1 armor or 2 health affixes. It really depends on how you build mitigation from that point on. Hitting 2k hp and 50% armor should get you well into Empowered monos. Strength and vitality as your main prefixes for gear will also help.

Your idols are also a great source of health and armor so try swapping out more of the offensive idols until you find a balance.

Since you seem to be building around golden aegis don’t be to afraid of over capping resists either as that will make your blocks even more effective. Lastly once you ditch the Abomination chest piece you’ll need to think a bit harder about how you will sustain health. Regen, life leech, or pally heals.

For lvl 78 monos? That feels a trifle excessive! I’ve not had that much while doing the harbingers.

That reminds me of when I played SWTOR & for the easy mode raids people were demanding that you had the gear that dropped from the hard mode raids…

As I said, I think I’ve been spoiled by Legacy legendary gear for leveling. So health might have been an overestimation.
But 60% endurance is doable with gear/passives.
And you can get higher armor as well, at least 50% DR.

Thanks for the info guys. I few tweaks and I’ve weirdly got a ton more health (now around 1900), but damage barefuly suffered. Resists are all a bit higher too.

The shield is a temporary SFF one that will ultimate be replaced with sigeons reprisal, but I need another level or two with the merchant guild until i can get it.

Cheers for the help guys.

That is because you had way too many sources of flat health with too few of %health. You need a mix of both.
You usally have more sources of flat health than %health, so those tend to give you more later on.
