High GPU usage on an encounter [spoiler warning]

Hello,

A little piece of information for whoever in the dev team is doing optimization.

I just played the fight in Imperial Age against the Emperor’s champions where Alaric get killed and the High Priestess is a traitor and finally not a traitor.

During this fight, my GPU temperature went very high for a good period of time. I could hear the fans at very high speed and according to my GPU fan configuration, they should not ramp up so much before 80-85°C.

I think this is due to the “poison” spell the 2 bosses were making on the ground as I already experienced some GPU warm up (but not as intense as during the boss fight) while fighting mobs doing similar spell sooner in the game.

My graphic card is an AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, driver version 21.3.1 on Windows 10.

Thanks for this wonderful game.

Hey, Welcome to the forums…

This is probably a post more suited for the bug or technical support part of the forum… Please update it if you can.

Are you using framerate limiting on your in-game setup? (not vsync)… What you describe can happen with LE in its current beta state if you do not limit the framerate - this issue becomes especially important when running at high resolution / high graphic quality settings as this tends to exacerbate the problem. It doesnt only happen during the situations you are describing but in other graphically intensive situations… The framerate limiting (even a higher one like 120fps or 144fps) prevents the GPU from maxing out unneccessarily.

Hello,

Thanks for the answer. I updated the thread for “Bug report”, thought it was good in feedback because was not a blocking technical issue.

I was playing with VSYNC ON, but no framerate limiting since the two are mutually exclusive.

I will try to do more testing by limiting FPS instead of VSYNC, especially the encounter with another character whenever I got to this level.

Initially, I decided to post because I leveled without having such a GPU load with my current settings (VERY HIGH with Shadows on MEDIUM and Grass density on LOW) until this specific encounter.

Best regards.

That is how its “supposed” to work… But I have found through helping others that it doesnt always… the framerate limit seems to be the better choice in terms of stability and preventing the GPU running away…

The in-game graphics settings are quite tricky and the general concensus is that you need to do quite a bit of testing changing settings in a logical way and monitoring each impact… While generally certain things have the same impact for everyone, the actual impact seems to be very different depending on each players system configuration…

There are obviously also in-game events that will spike GPU & CPU usage - as you have found… There are MoF boss fights that are even more intense than the one you describe and fps spikes & GPU maxing are common IF you dont compensate for them…

Personally I err on the side of fps & stability so I dial back most things… I dont have decent hardware anymore (i5-7500/1060/16gb) but I can get 50-60fps on 1080p, 60fps limited, everything on very low or disabled… My GPU seldom exceeds 65-70% usage for a second or two and things stay nice and cool. I can run on 100fps, but I have found that by restricting the game, I get less fps spikes & everything stays stable and cool.
